It's not!!!!!

Just got letter, so glad I didn't withdraw my other apps. Have fun other EA'ers, but my future with Yale doesn't look so sunny anymore.

I got screwed over too :(. Not a dime. I'm hoping to get some money from Dartmouth so I can bargain with Yale.

Regardless, I will still end up at Yale (most likely).

I didn't get a dime as well... Need-blind financial aid screws the middle-class. AHHHH!! I feel so frustrated. I hope Princeton/Harvard/Amherst is better.

Newt, how are you gonna pay for it? Are you going to take out a loan?

Hmm... I think that it screws the people that save for college. My dad has been saving for a long time, and we have enough to cover the costs. It would be nice to get some aid though. Oh well... so how does yale rank with the others for you now?

Yeah, I'm also starting to wish that I didn't withdraw from Pton and Harvard. Now I can't compage aid packages :p

I'm confused with how Yale financial aid works. I thought they didn't give merit scholarships! but my family's in the middle-upper class bracket and I got half-tuition scholarship for Yale EA. How'd THAT happen? Does anyone know if getting more money from other schools can be used to bargain with Yale and when can we call and pester?

Well, Yale is still the number one school I want to attend. But at this point in time, I can't be picky. I'm just going to go wherever gives me the most money.

I wish my parents had saved for university, but it's kinda hard when you just immigrated a couple of years ago.

I know I don't know your whole family situation, but do you have money that your parents just wont spend for college? Because I'm pretty sure they would have given you money if you didn't have it in some form.

I can sympathize.....I got very little as well....sigh. Is the aid they give you "loans" or actual grants? Mine didn't seem to specify.

as they gave me nothing... it didn't really matter in what form the nothing came.

Sorry about that, Davidrune--and I'm worried about the same thing happening. My dad's company gives occasional large income bonuses in place of retirement benefits and (of course) one came last year. Though he explained it in a letter, I don't think Yale would be overly generous from what I've heard.

I can't believe that they gave you NOTHING! How stingy...

My financial aid was very generous. I had a lot of displayed need, and Yale met it all. Their office was very nice to work with, and everyone I talked to tried to help me out as much as they could.

Sorry yours wasn't better David. Come here anyhow. Loans aren't that bad. (Not when you'll get out of school with an amazing job)

Well, honestly, HYPS will go out of their way to aid really disadvantaged students to bring diversity. They will especially bend over backwards for qualified URM's to come.

I'm not sure how wealthier URM's are treated in the finaid department; my guess is that they are treated better than rich whites or Asians, but still not incredibly well.

Joey

I got nothing either. And I agree with the middle class getting screwed thing, davidrune. I wish I better understood how they calculated aid and stuff. My dad was out of work for like, six months last year after getting laid off, yet there wasn't really a slot to put that on the Profile.

My parents emigrated from China with like, $150 and started exercising their stereotypical Asian frugality when I was in the womb. I'm lucky that they've saved enough to be able to put me through four years at Yale (which is probably why we got no aid), but it makes me feel guilty that I'm wiping out 20 years of savings in 4, leaving them with much less to retire on. Especially when some state schools are offering me full rides, or when I was guaranteed admission into UT b/c I'm instate and top 10%. Also, I've been accepted to Rice, which is a great Ivy-caliber education at 10k less a year. But my parents want me to go to Yale, and I want me there too.

david - princeton is the most generous with aid and maybe u will be joining us in the fall! =) i hope ur aid turns out beautifully haha

I'm also hoping to get into Princeton so I can bargain with Yale :P

haha u can be like....but pton gave me 20k and u only gave me 9k please more money! =P

and then yale will tell u that they are stingy bastards =D

Yale will bend when you show them your HP offers.

Zuma, I sure hope that's true. AND that I get into HP. I'm going to call them up tomorrow, and see what's going on.

BTW... does anybody know at what income level a family of four is expected to receive no contributions?
