My score for the March SAT was as follows:

CR 800
MATH 610
WRI 800 (12 essay)

I am not sure whether I would be able to significantly increase my math score if I retook--I'm thinking another 50 points, absolute tops. I'm planning on applying to UMich (I'm in-state), among others. Will this score hurt my chances there and at other top-to-mid-tier schools?

Wow, I would kill to have your CR score. Yes, it would definitely be worth it to retake. Just do some practice for math and watch your score go up!

If you’re going to apply to a top-tier liberal arts college and/or am planning to major in the humanities, or are pursuing a college that accepts superscores/score choice, don’t retake;
but some colleges (I think Columbia is an example) only look at CR+Math, so the perfect writing may have less of an impact. I think it’s extremely important to know how your prospective colleges look at the SAT before you make a decision to retake.

I personally think that the Math is the easiest section to study for (I even consider myself an English-oriented person), and that even for top students, CR and W may vary more in scoring.
You’ve probably figured out the rest of it (your 800s are impressive, and if you retake it, it’s almost certain your math score will raise while one or both of the other two fall…it’s just an extent of whether it’s worth it or not). It also varies depending on the grade you’re in; if you’re a sophomore, definitely retake, but you’re probably a junior. (If so, only a few more opportunities: May with late reg which is not recommend if you have AP testing, June, and fall of senior year, or try the ACT)

I hate to go the cliched route, but whether you should retake or not really depends on your own knowledge of your abilities (I’m stuck in a similar situation with a 100-point discrepancy with Math over CR; I decided to retake, though I wouldn’t have if I’d had your scores). Take a ton of practice tests from BB or elsewhere as you study (but BB recommended, unless you’ve gone through them all already) and gauge your average score per test in the months leading up to the next SAT.

i’ll switch my 800 math for your 800 cr :)

You are quite the opposite of many people (math is the section with the most 800 scorers).

What do you plan on majoring in?

Sorry, but ***. You get perfect in CR and Writing but you get 610 in Math???

Damn, I would kill to have your CR.

OP: Practice for a good amount of time, and retake maybe after the summer. You could probably get the 800 and have a 2400 superscored

Thanks very much for all of the input. It’s very helpful. I definitely won’t be able to do a retake this school year (yes, I’m a junior, and I’m taking the ACT in June), and so now I’m weighing the benefits versus the costs of doing some intense studying over the summer and putting my money on an increase in the fall. Math has never been an area where I’ve excelled, obviously, and I didn’t study at all for the other sections, which is probably why I’m so averse to the idea of investing a lot of time in math.

alihaq717, I’m planning on an English major with a minor in either creative writing or history.

I win the medal for most lopsided score. And yea, retake that Math.
M: 800 W: 800(80/10) CR: 600

Lol I had

Cr: 800
M: 690
W: 800

and I though that was bad. What should he and I use to JUST prepare for the math SAT?

^Haha, I’d trade with you anytime. Seconded–how should we go about targeting this section?

And I’m a “she,” by the way.

I have the same problem, although I don’t have those nice 800s I have:

CR 720
M 630
Wr 760

I also would like to know how to attack this section!

Math is just naturally easy for me, but you should do every BB problem in math. Always finish the 25 minute section in 15 minutes. Study permutations and combinations online because if you keep pushing that off, you’ll never learn it. Other than that, always double-check your answer with a method different than what you just used.

Have any CR tips? I got -10 Passages and -6 Sentence Completions wrong…on the whole test…

^hotinpursuit, just use some lists and books such as Direct Hits for the vocab. The passages are where I cannot help you.

Go through some math sections in the Blue Book and figure out what type problems you are missing (geometry, functions, algebra). See what type problems you miss on the ACT math too. You will probably see a pattern and can focus your reveiw on your weak areas. It is worth taking the SAT again in October.

@hotinpursuit: thanks for the tips. great summary.

So we dont any more of these “retake” threads i am going to tell you when to not take it agian. It’s easy, when your happy with your grade and you feel you cannot do better you are done. A realistic happy, not the 2400 thing. Good job anyways.

How are you so good at CR? Any tips?

Honestly, the best advice I can give you is to read, read, read. Make it a habit. I’m positive that that’s why I have this score. I’m not familiar with any prep books or other aids so I can’t really help you there–sorry!

Lol I got 800 MAth, 680 CR, 760 Writing
