I scored 650 for Critical Reading, 770 for Math and 800 for Writing. Total score of 2220. Should I retake SAT to get a higher score for CR? I understand 650 is very low for the schools I want to apply to (HYP, Columbia, UPenn, Georgetown, NYU, Dartmouth.)

If you think you can improve your CR score, then re-take.

Retake it, you won’t lose anything. I scored a 2280 my first time, then was able to raise my math score 50 points, bringing me to a 2330. If you can get all 3 scores into the mid 700s you’ll be golden.

I would also try the ACT. Many students find it easier than the SAT.

I got a 680 on the SAT Math. I have a 800 CR and a 720 Writing.
I just took the AP Calc exam and SAT Subject Math II.
I got 2 As in my AP Calc courses.

If I get a 4 or 5 on the AP Calc exam or a 750+ on the Math II exams will that help balance out my 680 on the SAT ?

Should I take the SAT again my senior year and try to raise my Math score ?

I plan on majoring in the social sciences.

I don’t get it, How do you get a 650 in CR if you got an 800 in writing. To me, it’s kinda like hand-in-hand. I guess it’s just me…

Meh, my sister had a 690M 720CR and 800W and was in at Columbia, Chicago, and Michigan (Columbia was ED so she didn’t get to hear from anywhere else). I’d say your pretty much fine and should focus more on GPA and EC’s.

I’d say that writing is actually rather different than critical reading. A lot of people can buy a prep book, quickly brush up on grammar rules before the writing portion and raise their scores a lot. However, it’s not quite so easy for the critical reading section, as most of that section relies on how much experience one has with reading their chosen passage styles. Basically, CR is not a score you can influence at the last minute, or even within the last week or month. It’s more of a lifelong thing, so it’s not surprising to see a discrepancy in scores.

What tips do y’all have to improve my CR?

simply buy an advanced vocabulary book and memorize 10-15 words a day, and read at least one good novel every two weeks. Reading more will increase both your reading speed and comprehension

try the test again in 4-5 months after following this method of study and u should do fine if u have understood the novels without cliffnotes

Like other have said, if you think that you can score significantly higher scores the second time you take it then by all means take it again. But if you don’t think you will score significantly higher then I would spend your time strengthening your application; your essay perhaps.

It is nice however to have above a 700 in every section. If I were you I would go for the retake.

Definitely retake if you can get your CR up. I agree with Erin’s Dad’s suggestion to try the ACT if you can’t improve it.

Yes, you definitely have to retake.
