VERY LOW COST OOS COA universities......less than $25k COA for everything!

University of South Dakota, $18,926

https://admissions.usd.edu/cost-and-aid/tuition-and-fees.cfm

South Dakota State, $16,530

<a href=“Cost Estimate”>http://www.sdstate.edu/admissions/financing/undergrad/cost/

Midwestern State, $17,546

http://www.mwsu.edu/finaid/msu-coa-nonres

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, $17,334

http://usao.edu/financial-aid/2012-2013-academic-year

Northern Michigan University: Marquette, Michigan

Tuition & Fees (12-18 credits for 2 semesters) out of state
14,400 tuition and fees
8960 housing and food
for a total of $25940 direct costs

800 books and supplies
500 transportation
other costs 1260 are included in COA

$17,546 is the OOS cost (including transportation and personal expenses) living with parents.

For living on or off campus (not with parents), the cost is $18,612 for tuition, fees, room, board, and books, and $22,342 including transportation and personal expenses, so it still qualifies for this list.

For 15 credits per term (as needed to graduate in 4 academic years), it looks like $19,550 with the cheapest dorm and meal plan, $22,930 with the most expensive dorm and meal plan, for tuition, fees, books, room, and board (no transportation or personal expenses). It still qualifies for this list.

Also be careful of the following:

Whether the costs are for tuition, fees, room, board, and books only, or include transportation and personal expenses as well.

Whether the tuition costs are for a full course load (typically 15 or 16 credits per term are needed to graduate in 4 academic years).

Whether the costs are for the student living on his/her own versus with parents. For most out-of-state situations, the cheaper living-with-parents costs are unlikely. Exceptions may be if the school is near a state border but the parents live on the other side of the border, or if other relatives live near the school and offer the student a place to live.

Utah State: assuming 15 credits in 4 courses per semester, $21,558 to $21,958 (double room, 10 meals/week), $24,908 to $25,308 (private room in suite, unlimited meals per week)
<a href=“Page Not Found | Utah State University”>Page Not Found | Utah State University;

It is also not as difficult to gain residency for tuition purposes in Utah as in some other states, which can make later years of school even less expensive:
<a href=“Utah Residency | Admissions | USU”>Page Not Found | Utah State University;

Louisiana Tech: $25,869 for tuition (15 credits for each of 3 quarters), fees, room (regular dorm), board, books

Western Carolina University
http://www.wcu.edu/index.asp

1) Tuition and Fees Out-of-State $ 9264.00
2) Residence Hall Standard, double $ 1914.00
3) Meal Plan $ 1708.00
Total per semester $12886

I realize books and transportation will add to this pushing it over $25K but I thought it was pretty close.

UNC Pembroke

http://www.uncp.edu/admissions-aid/costs-paying-college/tuition-fees/tuition-required-fees

OOS Tuition YEARLY- $12,418
Fees $1933
Room and Board $7318
Health Insurance $1376

Total $23,045

Kat
note: you can see how the tuition differs from one UNC to another, it does for in-state tuition as well…but the in-state is significantly less than the OOS…son’s med school tuition at UNC-CH is almost $30,000 less per year as in-state vs. OOS

UNC Greensboro for OOS is over the 25K at $27582.

http://admissions.uncg.edu/cost-and-aid-breakdown.php

NC A & T is:
OOS Tuition and Fees and health insurance $8939 per semester
Room $2408 per semester
Meal Plan $1240 per semester

Total $12,587 per semester

NCA&T has an ABET accredited engineering school, nursing, school of agriculture, school of technology (they have a degree in motorsports technology, think NASCAR!) and a brand new joint school with UNCG of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.

http://www.ncat.edu/

^
True, and neither school seems to include books, personal expenses, and travel in their COAs.

It would seem to me that no school can meet that 25k threshold if they are charging 15k+ for OOS tuition.

But many of these schools have almost guaranteed merit awards. They may be small, but the tuition is low so even $2-3k helps. Some of the costs can also be kept low by selecting a different meal plan or watching the costs of books.

It CAN be done at many schools and I think it is a great thread to get people started looking at these schools. If a school is just over the $25k limit, see if there are other funds available from the schools.

Henderson State, $19,886 (Tuition/Fees/Room/Board/Books/Supplies)

<a href=“Financial Aid | Henderson State University”>http://www.hsu.edu/financialaid/

Brigham Young - Hawaii, $21,440

<a href=“Financial Aid & Scholarships”>Financial Aid & Scholarships;

That sheet says that frosh in the dorms have to choose the $1,340 or one of the $1,400 meal plans (per semester). But they can choose a lower cost traditional double at $1,754.50 per semester. Frosh costs with the $1,340 meal plan and traditional double would be $12,033.75 per semester, or $24,067.50 per year. These prices do not include books, transportation, personal, or miscellaneous expenses.

^^^^Yes, initially the freshman are directed to choose the more expensive one but after the first two weeks they can then choose a different meal plan. And the cheaper doubles are harder to come by for freshman since seniors and upper classmen get first choice for housing. Often times only the more expensive doubles are available by the time freshman are assigned housing. But that too can change after you are on campus, with roomies switching.

Son attended and his bill fluctuated as he changed meal plans (great cafe) and rooms. Usually incurring less cost.

Another aspect to point out that A&T does not charge anything additional for their engineering students and offers some engineering degrees (ABET) that are not available at NCSU or Duke. The campus also has about 4000 undergrads providing small intro classes and lots of teacher/student interaction. Son did not ever have a TA teach any of his classes.

Hope this helps.

Using <a href=“College Search & Match with our College Finder | CollegeData”>http://www.collegedata.com/cs/search/college/college_search_tmpl.jhtml to search for low cost of attendance (not including transportation and personal expenses) schools, there are 119 private schools under $25,000. However, most appear to be religiously affiliated, and many of those are focused on studying religion (although not all are; for example, BYU is religiously affiliated but has the more usual set of academic majors and offerings).

Searching for public schools searches by in-state cost to get 403 schools, but the list can be sorted by out-of-state cost. Of these, 69 of them have an out-of-state cost of $25,000 or less, although more list costs just above $25,000.

2 publics in West VA, Marshall and WVU, meet the criteria for just over $25,000. I know WVU has merit, have never researched Marshall for merit.
