Very nervous, please chance me?

(Rising senior)

Hi everyone! I've seen users warning of the futility of "chance me?" threads, but I feel the unbiased opinions of people here would be beneficial.

If the consensus is that I have a chance, it would greatly calm my nerves and give me the confidence to apply, and if I'm told I don't have much of a chance, it'll make it worth the headache of retaking the SAT/ACT and the time to expand my extracurriculars or improve myself somehow. Either way, criticism is more than welcome, and I apologize for adding another "chance me?" thread to this forum. c:

Your academic portfolio lools impressive, but your ECs seem lacking for MIT in my opinion.

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

I think both ECs and academics are both very solid.

Somehow your scores do not fit the stereotype. Winner of National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO?) did not score 800 in chemistry SAT which is much easier. You also scored below 750 for math part of SAT as an asian. Top in the class and yet <750 in each section of SAT and did not make the semifinalist.

Given that you have already seen the advice from a MIT admissions officer that

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-accurate-chance-mit.html

Then let me assure you that it is extremely unlikely that you can get the unbiased and useful opinion of anyone with any significant and useful experience of MIT admissions.

Good luck with your application.

I understand the confusion, I was the winner in my region for the chemistry olympiad, I myself consider it more of a semi-finalist sort of thing but the official certificate I got said “winner” so I decided to put it down. I took the chemistry SAT way after both the AP exam and the chemistry olympiad, and I regret it immensely because I was pretty rusty.

This is exactly why I don’t want to put my ethnicity down. I’m Filipino, if that means anything, and I feel as though the knowledge that I’m Asian makes my scores less impressive. Our school ranks based on unweighted GPA and, because of this, more than one person can be considered to be ranked #1 out of our 158. However, my transcript says 1/158, so I believe that’s what they will go by.

Semifinalists for the National Merit won’t be announced until September, so there’s a chance I am one.

I don’t understand how you couldn’t glean your chances based on other chance threads that are just all over the place and very hard to miss. With just a glance I knew you were in the mid-tier pool for MIT. You honestly don’t have anything different from other chance threads (I’ve already seen three to four chance threads that have very similar contents as yours) so why do you think making your own thread would produce any new response?

I don’t really mind people adding more chance threads to the forum, but what I do mind is people creating chance threads that have basically the SAME contents. You should go around the forums for past threads instead of waiting for responses on your rather unoriginal “chance me” thread.

As to your chance, you fall into the mid-tier of the application pool and thus it’s not a futile effort to apply to MIT.

Someone from Harvard forum created this thread. It’s better than to do a gazillion chance threads.

If you think about it, people who want responses from a chance-me thread lack confidence in their application. Stay strong and believe in yourself.

chance threads are literally the worst

I don’t know, Chris, threads about legacy admissions don’t seem to turn out too well either…

that was fun. chance threads are frustrating.
