Very simply question on the process

When you apply to a college, and you receive the letter of acceptance, do you have to tell them you are going to attend their school before they give you a brief summary of the financial aid you'll receive, or is it automatically sent after your acceptance letter and you make your choice after you see the packages?

To me, it seems the after acceptance letter is how it works (common sense) but the new guidance counselor at my school filling in for one on maternity leave was saying gibberish and admitted she wasn't even sure herself about the process ("....sigh?")

I feel really silly (a.k.a "Dumb") for asking this question...

Most colleges give you your financial aid offer when they admit you or – if they are rolling admissions colleges – they let you know in about April, about a month before the May 1 deadline for notifying college whether you’ll accept their admission offers.

Check the colleges’ financial aid web pages for info about when colleges will let you know about your aid package.
