I am currently trying to transfer for the fall from my private four-year school to a state school closer to home, because my current scholarship will be revoked after the fall semester. However, I'm very scared that I won't be accepted, because my GPA for my first year is under their suggested GPA for transfers. They desire a 2.5, and my GPA is a 2.38. I had a very tough first year, and unfortunately, my hard adjustment to school shows in my grades. Am I completely screwed? Is it possible for me to interview with an admissions counselor and somehow get them to still see me as a good candidate for transfer? Has anybody else had an experience of transferring with a lower GPA then the recommended one, and was it successful? I am in such a depressed state right now because I don't even know where I will be in the fall. I have no idea where my life is going come fall...

ok in order for us to help you we would need to know what schools your reffering to .

current school-boston college

transferring to (hopefully, with my gpa :( ) suny albany

i belive , but i am not sure b/c i am not highly familiar with those schools on the east coast. but BC is considered a better school than SUNY albany so the fact that your gpa is a bit lowere but your coming from a better school should play some role in it.

Also state schools are a bit easier to get into, even though i know Albany is a pretty decent school.

The other thing is that besides your gpa, there are OTHER factors oviously, how does your essay and extra curriculars look?

I have a good essay (at least in my opinion).Only a couple of EC's in college however, such as being secretary of our chapter of a biochemistry organization, and being on the African Student Organization. I am also submitting a recommendation from my advisor, whom i have gotten to know very well throughout the year. I have 30 credits so far, so I do not have to send my HS transcript, but I am going to send my AP and SAT scores.

SAT 1320 (650V/670M)
APs-US Hist-4; Comparative Govt-4; English Lang-4, English Lit-3, Biology-5

i don't think you'll have a problem transferring from bc to suny albany.

good luck = )

Don't give up :)

Thanks alot for responding. Hopefully i get in..

I AM EXTREMELY WORRIED.....i had a 3.9 gpa, all my classes were going well i was looking at maybe a 3.5 gpa, but now my anthro class i might be getting a D....im planning to go to uci......will they revoke me for a D on my last semester?

elvissim..you are going to UCI? What happened to UCLA comm?

no worries elviss, chances are they will have you do some sort of alternative thing to make up for the D (like attend a summer school class or a required class in the fall semester). Either way, I highly reccomend you contacting the admissions office if you do end up with a D.

grrr I REALLY WANTED UCLA COMM.........but uci chancellors scholarship plus some other grants = full ride, i can't deny free money like that

Ah I feel ya Elviss, I have a friend who turned down UCLA as well for a full ride to UCR.

Wow. Well, good luck at UCI. What is your major there?

Edit: Also, one of the reasons I turned down UCLA was because Berkeley gave me a full ride. So, I totally understand...very hard to turn down a full scholarship.

criminology, its free plus i was thinking it would be easier to get into a top law school because i would be aiming for a higher gpa........I REALLY HOPE SO WILLDO....my situation is weird, i don't know if i get the D or not until like 1 day before june 1st.....should i contact the uci admissions now?.....ps, i hope you become a great PR after ucla comm talkell

If you feel that is what it'll take to help ease your nerves, then sure. Just ask then what sort of alternatives are available if it does happen. On your UCI acceptance page, it specifically states that any grade lower than a C will not always mean instant rejection (or something like that I forget).

lol...thanks elvissim, but I have already changed my mind on the UCLA/PR thing.

I decided on Berkeley and then I plan to go on to law school...hopefully, UCLA. I know that is never a guarantee..but that's my goal. In fact, I've already cracked open the LSAT study guide. =)

Also, elvis, I seriously/highly doubt UCI will revoke your admissions because you get a D. I'm sure you're fine; just contact them and let them know the situation.

elvissim, check your UCI admissions FAQ on my berkeley FAQ it says this:

"Q: If I am unable to meet all of my conditions of admission, what will happen?
A: Typically, your admission to Berkeley will be cancelled. You must contact Berkeley immediately if you believe you will not be able to meet your conditions of admission."

lol ok, I know that doesn't sound good in your situation (or mine if I fail to get that 3.0) but I recall UCI's FAQ saying something different.
