Let's see who gets in where. Leave a little personal info like: branch, job, active/reserve/guard.

What do you think best prepared you for college and do you think veteran status had a major role in acceptance? I'm sure vets would like to have some info next year and this forum isn't very active!

USAF, Linguist, Active duty 6 years. Having to pass or be rolled into another career definitely forced me to learn better study habits. Also, working with pressure and deadlines for 6 years, without the ability to quit, taught me care about what I do in order to enjoy day to day life and excel.

I was a Marine in DC for 4 years. Got out as a sergeant (E-5). I’m doing the community college thing in FL right now and I want to transfer to NYU in the fall of 2011. My HS grades sucked…I mean a GPA of around 2.2 or something cause I was a total bum. I have a 3.7 after my first year in school and I want to do better after my next two semesters. I also helped found the Student Veterans Association at my school. What else do you think I need to do? Are these schools impressed by a solid military record or not? Thats the one thing I can not figure out is if schools actually give a damn about military service. I think it means a lot more that being a part of your HS debate team, but I’m a bit biased I suppose.

If military service had a great impact on your life or in the world around you, then yes they do care. It’s basically work experience/EC on your application. My high school grades did not matter at all. I got in with my current GPA, an upwards grade trend (from previous college courses/tech courses in 2002), experiences in the mil (which I wrote a lot about in my essay), martial arts, familial struggles.

I would also recommend that you get involved in another activity relevant to your proposed major and keep a positive attitude :D

I can say that my military experience absolutely had something to do with me getting into a good school (that and good CC grades). Particularly with LAC’s (such as NC), military experience makes you an older, non-trad. student with (no doubt) a solid, life-experience-oriented admissions essay.
