Veterans going part time? Pros/Cons with GI bill?

Hi all,

I was accepted to spring 2013 but have a baby due in mid February and was planning to defer. I had a thought, is it possible to start my first semester as part time so I could start classes but have time to be a parent? Or would I have to attend full time and then switch? Has anyone attended part time and if so did your GI bill cover all the tuition? I have the post 9/11 and am wondering how I'm going to make out financially.

In short, no. In order to qualify for full BAH and full tuition you must attend school full time, Full time is defined as 12 semester credits. If you take fewer credits, 3 credits or one class for example then you will only get 1/4 of your benefits BUT STILL CHARGED for 1 month of your 36 that you get. Remember the 9/11 bill goes by months not monetary amount like the Montgomery GI Bill so even if you go part time you still only get 36 months of benefits.

WarreJor is right. It’s not worth going part time. Defer it. I have a baby due in late January and am deferring as well. Fall '13!

I already sent in my defer papers, early out package was denied. Congrats on your babies hopefully I’ll see you both next fall.

What is an “early out” and why was it denied?

A request to separate from the military before your EAOS (End of Active Duty Obligation Service) expires.

I did a school drop through the Army. My original ETS (end of time in service) was March 10 2013. I requested to be released Jan 7. I’m not sure how other branches do it, but the Army allows you to get out up to 90 days early to catch a school semester, but no more than 30 days prior to the school start date. It has to be approved by the first O-6 in your chain of command. It was a hassle and I had to be persistent with it, but it was finally approved about 2 weeks ago. Currently transitioning out!

The Marines do the same thing as long as you’re not ‘mission essential’ I was deployed and was going to leave Afghanistan in August. I submitted my ‘early out’ package and ‘poof’ I was extended to Afghanistan until Jan.
