Veterinary Science/Medicine

How well does MSU do with veterinary medicine compared to other schools that might offer the same major? Just a curiosity.

Veterinary medicine is postgraduate leading to a DVM. There is also a major in veterinary technology at the undergraduate level. which do you mean?

Apologies, I’m referring to veterinary medicine.

There are only 30 vet schools in the US. MSU is fine. Admission to vet schools is more competitive than human medical schools. Are you currently a college senior?

No, I’m only a junior; I’m just trying to explore some options.

Please carefully consider the career beforehand. I actually left vet school after my second year and am now in a PhD program. The veterinary industry is currently in an awful state with too many students graduating and not enough jobs. This is leading to a greater degree of DVM graduates specializing to become more competitive, which means 3-4 years of poorly paying (20k per year) internships/residencies. During this 3-4 year period you will also be paying off that 200k in debt you accrued going to vet school. Even afterwards, the job market is flooded, so salaries are not what they used to be. It is likely that you will make roughly 40k per year starting out, which is after 8 years of college and 4 years of residency/internship is not very promising. So please, only consider being a vet if it is your true passion. The hours are long, the work is strenuous, and earning the DVM degree itself is absolutely horrid in terms of workload and stress. Please talk to some new vets to hear about their experiences.

Yes, this has been a passion of mine for years. I’ve heard from not only my healthcare teacher, but other DVM’s as well, about how competitive vet school is nowadays. I’ll have to think about the whole process now and see if this is something I want to commit to.
