I’m a transfer student looking into Californian schools with good acting programs and obviously CalArts is pretty reputable in that area. However the school I transferred from (WWU) is known for being pretty liberal/granola and I’ve found I really don’t do well in that kind of environment.
Acting definitely is a more un-traditional orientated career path so it’s understandable the school leans liberal but I’m just curious if it’s overly so. Any comments/advice/rants appreciated haha.
Post on the theatre/drama forum under college majors if you haven’t already. You’ll likely get some feedback.
The impression I got from visiting CalArts with my daughter last year and researching the environment and curriculum is that it leans to very avant garde and experimental theatre. It is not what I would call a traditional theatre training program in the classical sense. But they turn out some great actors and have a solid reputation. My daughter knew pretty quickly that it wasn’t a good fit for her which sort of broke my heart since it is so close to home for us. But I would say just based on what we observed it is likely a pretty liberal/granola kind of vibe to an extent. This is Southern California after all - kind of goes with the culture here, especially with the beach and Hollywood scene. I would suggest you try to schedule a visit. They invited my daughter to shadow classes which she opted not to, but it seems a good way to get a feel for the environment and approach.
I have never been to Calarts- but I can only imagine most schools in California have a very liberal vibe…
