I was just wondering how frequently students play video games in college and which consoles and games they prefer. Please give me some examples and also the duration of playing.
Most of the games I’ve played recently are PS3 or Wii games (The Last of Us, Dark Souls I/II, the BioShock series, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros). I’m not a huge gamer myself, but I like a good game every now and then. There are multiple other games that are pretty popular within my dorm.
I play Smash 4 for a couple hours at a time either during weekends or after a major exam. ~Roughly once a week.
Awesome! I love Nintendo games! How much free time would you say you get per week day? Also, if you could, include your major and credit hours. Thanks!
My friend plays PC games a lot – he’s in the eSports club at our college and is on at least one League of Legends / similar games team. He’s majoring in Comp Sci.
That’s awesome! Thanks for your reply!
Currently a math major.
There is a LoL tournament at MIT every January, I believe. So yeah, we do like games too
Electrical engineering, 17 units
Hope there’s some video game club at the college I’m going to.
I played League while an undergrad (still do as a PhD student though considerably less often now… I have gotten into Hearthstone as my current timesuck). Generally, for more time than I should have… It seemed that most of my friends played PC games but that’s probably because that’s just who I huge out with.
Side story- I met my first real friends at college by wandering around on a weekend night and seeing who else was in the dorm. Found a group of guys gaming and joined in. (I’m marrying one of those guys in less than 3 weeks.)
ETA: I probably played around 10 hours a week as an undergrad (depending, of course, on what was going on.) I took between 16 and 18 credits each semester, double degreed in anthropology and arts and humanities, and worked full time.
I play LOL in my school whenever I have enough time for studying, homework, test AND extra time. I still got good GPA. Too bad my mom thinks that playing LOL equals to potential rejection from med school
I’m taking 20 units, so gaming has taken a backseat for me (for now, anyhow). On the weekends, I still find plenty of time to game if I want to, but I’m usually focused on working/studying for that.
So, basically…gaming is still a big thing (more in some schools, and for certain majors) for college students. If you’re in want, there are plenty of clubs and such for like minded gamers, so game away, but not too much.
It’ll obviously differ by school, but you should have no problem finding other gamers. I played regularly through school, as it took mine and my friends’ place of drinking. Instead of going out and getting wasted like a lot of other students, we’d play CoD and Halo for 4+ hours every Fri/Saturday night (and I’d play solo during the week.) I was a physics major with 15 credits per semester on average.
I just started playing video games this year (played them in middle school and took a looong hiatus). I personally enjoy PC games on my laptop, because it’s more convenient than maintaining multiple consoles. Some of my favorites are World of Warcraft, Portal, and Bioshock. My friends usually like playing Xbox, PS3, and Wii games like Fallout, CoD, Skyrim, and Super Smash Bros. We usually play for about 2-3 hours during week days and about 5-6 hours or longer during the weekends.
Awesome NHuffer! I want to major in physics as well!
Dota 2 > LOL, js.
Definitely dating myself here but we played Halo 1 for Xbox, and the original counterstrike quite a bit when I was a freshman/sophomore. I then got hooked on Runescape towards the end of my sophomore year, and that pretty much consumed my gaming time until graduation.
I had a great group of gaming buddies though! Good times…
I was my PC playing all sorts of random games during my free time
LOL, Dota2, total war, civ, starcraft, hearthstone, guild wars 2, swtor, vindictus, elder scrolls (but not eso).
Seeing as I got 19 credits this term, I game much less than last term when I was on co op
I have a thinkpad for schoolwork and a desktop in my room for games. I mostly play single player games like GTA 5, Skyrim, Bioshock, Paradox Games, Civ, and most recently the Witcher 3. I usually binge play on a weekend and then don’t touch games for a week. Having my games only in my room is pretty nice, if I know I can’t get distracted I can just leave.
This is a very broad question. Many college students don’t play video games at all. There are also people that I see sitting around campus playing WOW during their breaks between classes. Some college students spend entirely too much time playing them.
As far as variety…pretty much anything.
