Hey, I am an international student. I wanted to know some views on WP Carey school of business. How is it in comparison with Kelley school of business.
bump
I have alittle insight, that may be helpful. I had to research Kelley School, since I have never heard of it!, thus Indiana University!, not exactly the centre of US commercial thinking or research, however it is very highly ranked and most of its programs are well respected and thus ranked, but I have never heard of it let alone met anyone who attended.
I obtained my MBA in Europe, but I did serve on an advisory board at the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU and thus have some experience. For an MBA I think ASU might not rank as highly as Kelley, but I suspect the alumni network, internship opportunities and faculty are similar, I was particularly impressed with all these during my time as an advisory board member.
As for undergraduate school, I frankly am not a fan of undergraduate business degrees, I find them next to useless for finding good employees, few business school undergrads have an ability to write, use critical thinking or strategic thinking, I have long maintained your should study something you love or will give you a solid education at undergraduate such as: English, Philosophy, Statistics or Economics, I suggest I can teach a undergrad philosophy student business in 6-8 weeks, no need to spend 4 years getting a ‘business degree’, you need to know how to write, provide analysis, research and critical thinking and you’ll get that in spades doing a ‘liberal arts’ undergraduate degree in a soft science and then get an MBA if that’s your calling. Just my 2c
@Englishman We agree for once. I also like to see several years of work experience before going back to school for an MBA. An MBA is also very useful for engineers who what to go into management. I got my MBA from Michigan’s evening program. Classes were available to day students, but evening students had priority for registration. My guess is that fully half of my classmates were engineers at one of the Big 3 automakers.
I’m glad we agree, strongly second you’re work experience before grad school advice. I will not recruit anyone who went straight from undergrad to an MBA, no experience.no job !. Good pointe…
How about a degree in economics , @Beaudreau and @Englishman . I do have that option .
Also , please give me a little more insight on how good is WP Carey School of Business . I would still like to know .
A degree in Econ is very well respected, be aware most Econ degrees involve ALOT of Math, which is just the sort of content most companies like to see. I think Econ is one of the best undergrad majors you can choose. But it can be very rigourous (English sp) and thus well respected
@Englishman so would you say that taking a econ degree from lets say IU would be viable?
I think it might be viable and doable and worthwhile at both IU or ASU. But where do you want to spend the next 4 years+, Indiana or Arizona…?
@Englishman I got into IU, but I didnt get into kelley. I have my major as finance , and I would have to go standard admission for Kelley. But you need to maintain a high GPA ( B or more ) . So if I might not get in, I will go to the College of Arts and Sciences, and opt for Eco. For me, IU looks better than ASU . I have got friends there and also I got a brief idea about the life in Indiana.
Then I think you have made the right decision. Good luck. Alot happens in college that you cannot predict, I suspect you will likely change your major at least once, but if IU is your current choice go with it. WP Carey will always be there for your MBA!
I also have Penn State as an option @Englishman .
Yeah but unless you like Football and old men, I think you’re better by far sticking with IU with ASU for your MBA
Well I am still being quite nervous, because you know, I will be going to a foreign country . And I would be spending a fortune . I just want to get the best option for me
Then take the most cost effective option to which you have been or will be admitted, which ever costs less, GO THERE, save you $$$$ for Grad school at some time in the future, but WORK between undergrad and starting your MBA, otherwise…well it will be tougher
thank you !
@ParNeel I am in the exact same boat as you. I am debating between Carey and Kelley. Both have their pros and cons. I also got into Carey but not into Kelley and would have to go in as standard admissions. Both graduate programs are highly ranked Kelley is ranked 21 and Carey is ranked 30 and both have similar jobs at graduation and salary. Im leaning towards Carey because I am afraid of not getting into Kelley and don’t want to waste my time at IU if i don’t get in.
@heat233 a bit too late , man. I committed to Penn State instead. W.P Carey is amazing for Supply Chain management so you should definitely consider it !
