Villanofun

What is the deal with the nickname Villanofun? Is there any truth to the name that there is not much to do at Villanova?

I do not think the nick name really applies anymore…there seems to be plenty of fun at nova

My son is a freshman and was concerned about the same thing. But, that has not been the case. He seems to find something fun to do all the time. He is very happy there.

It’s true. No fun. If people can leave and go home on the weekends they do. The campus is quiet. They like it like that.

Based on my S experience and my own experience on campus it is a dull place, on campus. The administration is very strict on drinking, which sounds good to a parent but creates a prison like atmosphere for the students there who are not excited about attending events where they serve ice cream sandwiches and soda. Not much happens on campus even on the weekends. There is a social life off campus but kids have to drive or take cabs to get to the parties and the local police have little to do but try to bust students. There are many students who will not have a problem with this, see comments elsewhere, but most parents would not recognize it as a residential university at 10 pm on a Friday or Saturday night.

It all gets old eventually. Make sure to check out reviews of students on that other site (they star it out for some reason… but just google villanova students review) if you’re a girl because the whole hopping into a random car to bring you to some sketchy party that you don’t know the location of… it happens all the time. If you’re coming from Cali/FL where they have real parties, you will not be wanting for nothing. You will be bored. If you’re from NJ like everyone else, you will still be bored, but used to it, 'cuz that’s what the scene has always been.

Be discreet about dorm-drinking or have a lot of $$$ to pay for fees.

I agree with CandidObserver. My frosh S is not enjoying his time there. He has to travel into Philly & go to UPenn for a social life. Frats are played down during freshman recruiting but they are a huge part of the social life there. I think part of the problem is the way the dorms are set up. Freshman on their own campus, West campus for upperclassman, & sophomores on main campus. There’s no interaction and no reason to leave your section of campus to go to another. Oh, and did I mention when they run out of freshman housing they will dorm freshman in sophomore dorms and on west campus with the upperclassmen and totally isolate these students. This is a horrible residential life policy. Son is preparing his transfer application.

NYMama : sorry to hear of your sons transfer.
Good luck to your son where ever he ends up.

For everyone else:

Villanova has a well above average freshman retention rate of 94-95%.
Most freshman find it to their liking , but Villanova is not for everyone.

If your idea of Fun is to get bombed every week , look else where ,you will run into trouble. The legal drinking age is 21.

As for class interaction , involvement in extra curricular activities is a great way to meet upper classmen.

ah yes, NYmama is right. boys who want to party better join a frat or play rugby or be very good friends with people who are or you will have a hard time as a boy. $5 at the door. girls can go wherever they please.

oh, don’t waste money on ticket parties unless you have a fake.
