Villanova vs Bucknell - Econ/Business

I'm trying to narrow down my list and it seems like Villanova and Bucknell have a lot of overlap so I thought I'd eliminate one of them.

Right now I'm leaning towards Bucknell because of it's smaller size compared to Villanova. And I think Bucknell also lets students run part of it's endowment fund.

I'm majoring in Economics (or Business) most likely. I might double major in Political Science (or at the very least, minor).

What has a better Econ/Business program? I've searched CC for this but the opinions seem to be rather mixed.

Villanova has a religious affiliation (so if you don’t like that, I would eliminate it)

Bucknell is very “fratty” (If you are not really into Greek Life I would consider getting rid of it)

I have heard villanova has a very strong business school (ranked 11 i think if you care about rankings…)

If you want an LAC experience, Greek life and being in a more rural location than I would go Bucknell. If sports, a larger size student population and being close to a city is more important, than go Villanova. They are both terrific schools for your intended major so it is just a personal choice based upon your preferences. Good luck!

Might look at Colgate and Holy Cross.

Both are great schools but I am partial to Bucknell. Its Business major is very competitive to get in to however. The school recently changed the major from a Dept. of Bus. to a School of Business with plans in the future, I was told, to make it a College of Business. This means they are putting resources in to making it an even better major (like its College of Engineering).

Bucknell also has Division I sports, although not in competition with Villanova’s basketball. But they do play in the Patriot League and play mostly Ivy’s in non-leagued games (especially football).

You can get by fine at Bucknell w/o being greek. There is plenty to do. However, it is in a more rural location and is smaller student population wise.

I think it has a better academic reputation. From what I have read (on CC and elsewhere), it has a good presence on “the street,” meaning the financial world in NYC.

It’s up to what you want. Good luck w/ your decision and acceptance.

Bucknell has always enyoyed a a much stronger academic reputation although Villanova has narrowed the gap in the past few dacades somewhat.

Thanks! I’m not big on Greek Life but I am looking for a more LAC experience (so obviously the smaller size is a plus…I’m kinda ambivalent about the location though).

par72, Ya I’m looking at Colgate too!

On a scale of Georgetown to Notre Dame, how big is religion at Villanova?

Go to Bucknell!

Oh I haven’t gotten into either one (though judging by my school’s scattergrams I might be a “Match”), I’m just debating which one I should apply to :)

Nova has a better job/alumni network on Wall Street these days, the business school is one of the best in the nation and the basketball program does not hurt in getting the top students to apply

Villanova has recently passed Bucknell in academic prestige.

Villanova’s acerage SAT for combined math and verbal is now 1310 whereas it is 1298 for Bucknell.

those combined SAT scores are virtually identical – 10 point difference is meaningless.
