We recently received a letter saying that my son had been admitted to the USC Honors College. I did a search and it sounds like in past years, there have been special admitted student visit day sessions for students admitted to the Honors College -

Does anyone know if there will be days like this during Spring 2012 and if so, what the dates might be? Thank you!

Near the end of March is Scholars’ Weekend, where anyone who has a scholarship will get an invite. Last year, they had a meet the Honors College thing the Friday afternoon before that. Assuming they do the same thing this year, I would plan for either March 23-24 or 30-31.

Thanks!
Hmmm.
March 30 31 is nice for us because that is spring break but I think we might try to go down for a visit sooner than that. DS and I would both like to see the Honors Dorm and I would like to learn more about Honors College requirements.

I would definitely plan your own trip. Scholars Day is for all scholarships students, not just honors. The main advantage would be to meet some other honors kids, but other than that you could do well on your own. Call the honors college and they will set up a meeting to answer all your questions about the college. I’ll bet they could also set up some class visits and maybe an overnight with an honors student and you might even get a more personal feel.

If sons stats are high enough that he might get Mcnair, those students get a whole weekend dedicated to them which is great. Not sure what standards are for that since we’re instate. My child did Carolina scholar weekend and friends she made there are her best friends now.

Thanks for your suggestion. That is what we were thinking too - that we would visit earlier. (Do you know when we’d find out if USC they considered him a potential McNair scholar?)

hey, if i didn’t receive a honors acceptance by now did i get rejected? do they send you a rejection letter or only if you got accepted?

We are hoping that our D will be considered as a McNair candidate but believe it is really competitive so we are trying not to get our hopes up too high. I looked and believe the weekend the candidates are invited down will be the last weekend in Feb. We are actually flying down this afternoon to visit the campus. The staff has been incredibly helpful with setting everything up for our D to visit a class, see the Honors residence, etc. Really looking forward to the trip! Good luck to your son.

did you have to fill out something to be a mcnair semifinalist/finalist? or is it anyone who filled out the honors app?

Anyone who filled out the Honors application is considered.

My son got acceptance in Honors but nothing about McNair yet. Anyone get lucky yet?

McNairs notification need to be coming anytime now. If it does not, I think my son did not get invited. It is 25th. So getting late. How are we supposed to get time off and air tickets etc?

midwestdad, the University will arrange air travel for you. Notification should be coming soon; I would suspect sometime within the next week. They typically notify finalists at the end of January. I don’t believe that they have been sent yet, but I do not know that for sure.

We haven’t even received word of Honors College acceptance yet, much less anything about McNair. Starting to be concerned. I too would like to know if the kids will receive a letter either way - whether they are admitted to the Honors College or not. It would be a bummer to receive nothing. I read somewhere that another round of acceptances to the Honors College will be going out mid-Feb - I’m thinking those are the HC students who do not receive the McNair or other large scholarship…

Well Embers, thank you. I can continue to be on pins and needles, I guess.

Honors acceptance has definitely gone out (at least one batch). If you applied for Honors, you have automatically applied for McNairs. So, you won’t know much till someone says it.

I agree. I would rather have a rejection letter than no news.

I would call admissions and ask. I think it’s a little like regular admissions. They send out an initial batch of honors college acceptances but do continue to accept to honors college but I would check with admissions and find out for sure. May be in honors college FAQ

Edited: Just check admissions and says all honors offers are sent by feb 15 so you have a couple more weeks!

has anyone from NY heard about honors yet?

Does anyone know if there will be a Honors College visit? And if so, any idea on date? Trying to make Spring break plans and would love to incorporate visit to USC in the mix if at all possible. Thanks!

To answer some questions about notification, I was notified about being a McNair finalist during the last week of January. I would think that all the McNair notifications are already out since USC has already sent us confirmation of our plane tickets for the last week of Feb (McNair Scholars’ weekend). My friend also applied to the Honors College and was accepted, though she did not receive any notification about McNair. The same is true for some other kids in my school. Based on this, I think that since that since all of the out of state students who filled out the honors college app are considered for McNair, USC only notifies the students who are named McNair finalists.

We just visited on Friday Feb 3, the other two days mentioned to us were March 23 and April 13 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. You must reserve your space at sc.edu/admissions/meetheschc.html or call (803) 777-0305. It was a fun day! Nice dorms.

Honors College Days are not the same as McNair days, if I am correct. College girl is correct… McNair is already out and if you did not hear it (like my son did not), it is not there. I am not sure if it really matters whether you make a college visit during these days or not. Anyone know what is different on Honors Days?

Thx
