Visit to UCF campus

We visited UCF last October and will go back for auditions in February. Our S is interested in a large campus and really liked what we experienced. The undergrad enrollment is about 35,000, but it didn’t seem overwhelming to us. The campus is very easy to get around and the weather is AWESOME! We have friends who teach on campus, so got a personal tour. Dorms, cafeteria, gym, pool, cafeteria, bookstores, library - all GREAT! Our only disappointment was touring the facilities for the drama department. We met with two of the instructors in the MT program and were very warmly received. They provided a very informative session. We went to their production of, “The Boyfriend”, and the students demonstrated a very high level of expertese! The performance theatres (2) are good, but not what we expected for this size of campus. The instructors shared their frustrations about the facilities, but are definately making the most with what they have. Plans are in the making for improvement and expansion. The music department is separate from theatre, and it was not clear how much communication they have between the two departments. They invited us to attend one of the senior level classes. It was a class of six and they were working on their audition portfolio…very interesting! One student encouraged my son that it is possible to double major in marketing or ad/PR if he was organized and able to go an extra semester or two. The school has an excellent repore with the area companies and theme parks. We noted that many of the students had experience with D.World and Univ. Studio producitons. It is apparent that the professors are very serious about working with students and care about developing professionals in the field.

We’ll let you know how auditions go.

I was at UCF last semester, and I wanted to make a comment on the theatre situation.

The main stage is a renovated chemistry lecture hall, which means it's a very very wide stage and seating area, though not many rows, and probably seats 400-500 people. They are working on getting a "real" theatre, but it's at the end of the list (and they have a lot of stuff on that list).

Also, there are a ton of Disney Cast Members at UCF, and there's always a Disney rep on campus if that's what you're looking for (the one I talked to, Sandie, I saw all the time haha). I was in chorus with Cinderella, which was kind of exciting.

Oh, one more thing: I auditioned for the MT BFA, but didn't get accepted, and went as a Theatre BA instead. At the auditions for the season's shows, they had spots open for the BFA, and you could tell them if you wanted to be considered for MT. So if you love UCF, there's still hope if you end up going there anyway :)
