So I remember last year using this website to really learn more information about colleges, so I wanted to make my self available to anyone interested in UCF’s MT program. I’m a current freshman and really believe its a little gem in the heart of Florida that has great teachers, students and training. I would love to share my experiences with the school if anyone is interested. Feel free to post a comment or send me a message.

Overall I will say this is a program where teachers are TRUELY invested in seeing that their students succeed, are very knowledgeable, and are eager to share there experiences on to their students. UCF couldn’t be in a better location with Disney and Universal right around the corner and Orlando has a growing Theatre scene.

With the construction of a new Theatre Arts building, the facilities at this school will be state of the art complete with new dance spaces, rehearsal rooms, and a new theatre.

I’m very happy with my decision to come here and think this program is a very smart financial alternative than going to a huge expensive conservatory, without sacrificing training.

So my daughter is applying to several MT programs, but like several, having the Bright Futures Scholarship makes UCF sound better.

Frankly I have not heard much about the MT program other than on this website–which has not been good info, and when my daughter was at BTP last summer she listened to a lecture from a casting agent who had gone to school in FL and when listing “good” or existant MT programs never mentioned UCF. Don’t know if that was on purpose or not.

I’m auditioning for UCF’s BFA Musical Theatre program on January 30th and I’m really glad to hear from a current student! I have my songs picked out and I’m still deciding between two monologues. I’m pretty confident about the dance portion, it’s just the music skills test that I’m getting worried about…I read some music and I’ve started to study up on some music theory but it’s not my strong point. Was the test difficult or just there to see how much you know? I know the program is pretty competitive…only 8 guys and 8 girls get in, right? Any advice for a successful audition?

I don’t know the casting director who gave this information so i can’t say if it was on purpose or not, BUT I can speak from my experience and say the training and faculty in the program is fantastic and in looking at other programs in the state it falls within the top two with much potential to be the leading program in the state in the coming years. If you have any more specific questions i would love to answer them- just send me a personal message!

SingAnnaSing, the best advice I can give you is to JUST be YOU! I think the great thing about this program is they welcome ALL different types and faculty invest alot of time in making sure each indivual is successful- with that said their looking to see what you can bring to the program. Music Theroy is not something to worry about- it can only help and AT the end of the day, they wanna know if you can sing dance and act- the rest can and WILL be taught!
-If you have anymore questions feel free to shoot them my way! I’ll to get on here as much as my schedule allows!

I’m getting really excited about the audition. I’ve been practicing like a mad woman…it seems like no amount of practicing is enough, there is always room for more!
Did you participate in the optional tap audition? Tapping is my strong point in dance and I was curious as to what they have you do for that portion of the dance audition.

The optional tap portion is just to see your experience in tap- It requires no immediate preparation, they will just ask you to show them some of your most impressive foot work, double pull backs, time steps, etc all work

We are auditioning at UCF next week. Do you know if they have been accepting students for the incoming freshman class all along? Any chance that there won’t be any spots left?

They don’t make their final decision until all auditions are over. You will be emailed within a week or so if you are a finalist and still in the running. After all the auditions are over you will notified if you are accepted, rejected or on the wait list. If you are on the wait list they will tell you right around April 1 if you got in and then you have a very short period of time to accept the spot or decline.

I was at that same meeting with the casting director at BTP last summer. I talked with him after the meeting and asked about UCF. He slapped his head and siad that he forgot to mention them but that he sees good, quality students from there.

Dvscrnls,

Some older posts on CC mentioned that UCF does not have a NYC showcase anymore due to budget cuts. Is that true?

They notified me the day after my audition to tell me if I was a finalist or not. I’m a finalist! I don’t want to get my hopes up though because I know there is still a chance I won’t get in. Does anyone know how many finalists they take from each weekend/audition? Or once you are a finalist what the chances are that you may be choosen/on the wait list? I still have over a week until I’ll find anything else out…

Unfortunately we do not have a showcase in NYC, but because of the great location of the school being in Orlando, a lot of casting agencies, directors and/ or Theaters hold auditions on/ near campus.

Also alot of students end up working locally at Disney and other theme parks around the Orlando area.

Finalist are determined based on each audition. There is no set number and does not guarantee admission into the program. It is rather a tool they use to weed out the ppl they could be potentially interested in or not. After all the auditions they take the finalist pile and narrow it down to 24 students and 24 alternates.

Good Luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

dvscrnls, UCF wants a decision by April 1, but 3 schools I auditioned for are not sending letters till after the first week in April. Did you come across this problem last year?

I was accepted into the UCF MT program! Yay!

Just a few questions for people in the program…

-How are the teachers?
-Do you guys have cabarets or recitals?
-Is there any notable UCF MT alumni working on Broadway or TV/Film?
-Any talk of started to do showcases in New York for seniors?

I got accepted into the musical theatre program for the fall! Anyone ele got in? I’m looking to find some incoming MTs to chat with before the school year startes :)

Sashi45, i did run into a similar problem last year- but my advice would be to talk to the department and see what they can work out…

MTboy13,

All the teachers Ive had so far have been phenomenal, they all are very experienced in the field, love what they do, and most of all really want you to succeed. I think the faculty here is definitely one of the major strengths of the program.

We do often perform cabarets as well Vocal recitals at the end of each semester for voice classes

UCF alumni range but you can check the website for a complete list, David Blue however (ugly betty, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Stargate) recently came back to do a workshop at the school)

So far there has not been any talk of a New york Showcase for seniors however there are many opportunities for seniors to find work once they leave the program- in fact the majority of the senior class already have jobs lined up from theatres across the country and internationally, UCF does a really good job of making sure you find work once you graduate.

Hi dvscrnls,
My daughter is in. Do you live on campus? What is campus dorm life like? Id there a theater student click? What productions are you able to be a part of in the freshmen year? What is the dance training like? Any thing you can think to tell me so I can pass it along please help.
thanks

I do not live on campus but others who do seem to like it, I think its a great experience for your 1st year just because u get to experience everything on campus… its especially good if you don’t have a car your first year.

The theatre students are very close. In my class there are only 9 of us and were like brothers and sisters. It tends to be inevitable because you have all of your classes with the same people for the next four years.

Your able to be in all productions starting freshman year.

Any program, the effort you put in is what you get out, but with that being said I think the dance faculty and training here is pretty great. The teachers push you as far as your willing to go and make sure you get the step and understand what your doing.

Personally I am also a dance minor, and my teachers have been really great on teaching each person to their level.

Another great perk about dance at our school is that one of the head dance faculty members also runs a full service dance studio down the street, teaching over a 150 classes, all of which are free as long as your enrolled in a dance class at ucf. I think its an invaluable resource to have!

Great questions! If you daughter has anymore questions I would love to answer them for her. My best recommendation would be to come see the school sit in on classes and talk with students who go here to really see if this school is the right fit for your daughter.

Also if you can come check out the schools production of Rent, which is playing the next two weekends, its a great show and will give you a sense of what UCF has to offer when it comes to performance opportunities
