Visit

I'm a junior, live in the North-East, and very interested in Rice. I was going to visit this Spring break as any other time (i.e. in the Fall) would entail me missing school. Trouble is, the Admissions office won't allow Juniors on campus. What's with that? Can't say I'm particularly impressed with the level of encouragement the Admissions Office gives -- it's certainly not as welcoming as Cal.Tech. or MIT. Still, I'm not easily put off -- so is there any Rice student out there who'd be willing to show me around? (I'd try to find an alum. from my school, but no one in recent memory has gone to school in Texas!) PM me if you like. Thanks.

You are certainly allowed on campus, and can go on the tours and info sessions. They just don't do junior overnights because, as a small school, we don't have enough hosts.

(I'm on the overnight hosting committee, so I'm not just making this up).

Jenskate1: Thanks for the response. When I called Admissions I indicated that I would like to see some classes and/or do an overnight. Having finally persuaded one of my parents to let me visit Houston/Rice (have never been to Texas before) I was somewhat frustrated when I was given a blanket "No, sorry, no juniors allowed." I'm hoping to visit during my Spring break as, during the Fall I'll be busy with apps and school, and during the summer Rice won't be in "normal" session. Anyhow, I guess I'll try bugging Admissions again in the event that they do allow juniors on campus. Thanks again.

They absolutely DO allow juniors on campus. My son, who is a junior, went on a tour and info session a few weeks ago, and returned to campus today to sit in on a few classes. He was certainly welcomed to campus by the Admissions office and the professors. Jenskate is right -- the overnights are reserved for seniors. But this policy is consistent with the policy at many colleges.

definitly visit...u will fall in love with the atmosphere like i did
