Has anyone out there visited both of these in the same day? Is that enough time to get a sense of the school (and possibly meet with a coach) and the surrounding town or is it better to do each in a separate day?

We did exactly that. Amherst in the morning. Wandered around a bit by ourselves (my son and I), then went on the student-led tour, then while my son met with a coach (he prearranged this appointment time in advance) I went to the information session. We’d both already sat through numerous info sessions at other colleges, and they’re mostly all the same so he didn’t need to be there.

Then we headed for Williams, stopped for lunch along the way, got there in time for him to have a coach meeting while I sat through the info session, then we both went on the student-led tour.

It worked out fine for us and was a productive and efficient use of one of our very few days back east to look at schools.

Just a funny coincidence…I couldn’t resist mentioning it.

Oh… I should have been clearer, marama! My son and I did that trip in 2007. He’ll be a junior at Amherst this fall. I hope you had a lovely visit, though!

Wow that’s exactly what I’m doing this week - Amherst in the morning, Williams in the afternoon! :]

elbeen, I’ll be interested in your impressions of whta visiting the schools was like with no students on campus.

Sorry to disappoint, minoafrau! I checked online and both campuses are open this week. Plenty of current students will be doing summer study and be willing to give me feedback on campus life.

How long does it take to get from one to the other?

According to mapquest, about an hour and a half.

elbeen–how was your visit??
