I'm planning to visit UC Berkeley with my parents this weekend rather than attending the Cal Day on April 17th. Which closeby budget hotel/motel would you recommend? Thanks.

What is your budget? Most of the budget motels are along University Avenue, and if you don’t have a car, you can take the bus to and from the campus. Budget motels along University Avenue run about $100 - $130/night.

We liked staying at what is now known as the Vista Inn on University when we are late in booking. Parents usually like staying at the Durant, which is probably the closest to the campus, on Durant (duh!), but their prices are between $155 and $300 – sometimes more when there’s an event.

One place you might want to check out that is little known and right on campus would be the Faculty Club. Prices are very reasonable, but parents must have a child who is a student at Cal to stay there. If they are not booked up, I suspect they will allow a prospective family to stay there. Just google berkeley faculty club and you’ll get all the info.

Another interesting option is the Claremont Resort nearby. It has rooms available this Friday and Saturday night for around $190 including all taxes (yes, beware, the taxes jump any hotel rate up quite a bit from what is advertised). The cheapest room at the Durant is $185 for the same period (after adding in the taxes).

Not exactly budget but if it appeals to your parents they might think it worth the extra cost. Otherwise, the university avenue places are less expensive. For example, the Super 8 on University Ave has a room at $95 including taxes.

Get a hotel in Emeryville for like $80/night on Hotwire.com. It’s a 15 minute drive. If you don’t want to scare your parents with ghetto South Berkeley, make sure to take the Powell St -> 80 East -> University Ave route instead of taking San Pablo, Ashby, or Adeline ;)
