Visiting Boston from Amherst and Yale

Hello, fellow CCers!

I'm mostly interested in schools in the Boston area, but I also toured Amherst College and Yale and really liked them both. If I attended one of them, I would still probably visit Boston every weekend (for complicated reasons...not going to go into it here...)

What I'm wondering is, how easy/cheap/practical is it to visit Boston from these schools? Has anyone does this (or any type of regular travel to/from their college), and if so, what was it like?

Please don't try to convince me not to visit Boston if I go to one of these schools, or to stay exclusively in Boston for college. I'm looking for advice, not to be judged.

Thanks to anyone who responds :D

So you have a car? If not, have you checked out train and bus schedules?

Yeah I don’t have a car; I have in fact looked at the train and bus schedules. Bus is cheaper.

If you don’t have a car, there is regular Amtrak train service from New Haven to Boston. Amherst to Boston would be by bus usually connecting through Springfield. It’s much less convenient.

No judgement, but you obviously need to get into these schools first, and that is no easy feat.

that will get old real quick and expensive.
plus you will miss out on being part of the school.
if you must just go to school in the immediate boston area.
p.s. if this is for a relationship…do not let that control your future…move ahead with your own future, you are young and have your entire life to explore.

It’s not any worse than commuting to Boston from *Brown *- which you already posted about. Really, there is no sense in having this discussion yet again.

Well, the T gets really annoying after a while. It always runs late

BeanTownGirl ,yeah the post you linked back to that clears it up…yale or brown as a commuter school (people the world over want to get in and be part of those schools) and op just wants to treat them like a community college.

we know how the boyfriend/girlfriend from high school story plays out 99% of the time.
besides the fact getting in to any of those schools is beyond impossible. when the boyfriend 1/2 way into the first semester says hey, we should see other people and the other “friends” back in boston have gone their own way… OP will learn what many people before have learned. but by then other freshman have already bonded and she will be out of the loop.

1) If you are smart enough to think you will get into these schools (longshots for anyone) then you should just the google bus and Amtrak routes and schedules.

2) I know you don’t want advice and that you likely have a unique situation where this makes sense in your head but it, but going back and forth to Boston from these schools every week might prove to be very stressful if you want not only a full college experience but also just in terms of keeping up with your academic workload which can be intense at these top colleges (at many colleges Sunday is a huge day to get work done). And not knowing your financial situation, this arrangement will get expensive very quickly. I cannot judge or opine on your situation, but just think very carefully about the risks and rewards of getting yourself into such an arrangement.
