Visiting BU & Penn St-where to stay

Our plan is to visit one of these schools in the afternoon stayovenight & then do the morning visit of the other school. Any suggestions on where to stay (any luck with Priceline.com?) or which order to visit the two schools? Is their a 3rd school we should throw in before returning to central in NJ

We stayed at the All Suites Inn in Lewisburg. It was a prefab building (felt a little like a trailer), but it was large and clean.

We stayed at the Country Inn and Suites in Lewisburg. It was very nice and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. The staff was great.

We stayed at Country Inn and Suites; it was very nice. Just don't eat at the Country Cubboard or Kitchen near there. It is a buffet where everything tastes like mashed potatoes.

South of Lewisburg on Rt. 15 in the next town, there is a Hampton Inn where we stayed. Lots of other restaurants around for dining options.

If you've sufficient arrival time, I'd suggest staying in State College and doing Penn State first, then working your way back to NJ via Lewisburg. Lastly, you might want to do Lehigh and Lafayette, both competitors to BU. If you do one, my recommendation is Lafayette.

Another nearby possibility to BU, and a nice school, is Susquehanna, about 15 miles S in Selinsgrove.

Actually there are a ton of options you could do with some really neat places inbetween Happy Valley and Hoboken. What kind of parameters are you looking for?

btw, there are tons of places in State College from B & Bs to El Cheapo Sleepo.

the country inn and suites was AMAZING :) brand new, great breakfast, super clean, super friendly!

Lewisburg, Pennsylvania is a special place with a charm that is not replicated in State College, Pa.

agree ... State College is romantic to alums and students who grow up there, but not the least bit "charming" anymore. and watch your tail crossing the streets or you'll be runover.

I'm thinking practical logistics and collegiate experience vs. the niceties of a swing thru central PA. Seems to me this is biz vs. pleasure, time to git 'er done vs. savoring the blueberry muffins and chicken putt pie. Save that for parents weekend. Guess I'd rather be heading home from Lewisburg than State College, and assuming that it's go out one nite and pull the trigger in the a.m. ... i.e. that BU would be the grand finale vs. the 1st stop. Either way works and it's just in my older age, I ponder these things knowing what it's like walking campuses all day and hankering for my home bunk. I concur on the country inn though.

Thanks Whistle Pig- exactly the game plan recommendations that I was looking for!

A Bucknell grad here, who made two trips to Penn State this fall, and stayed at the Atherton Hotel both times- highly recommend this one. Mention you are visiting the college and you get a great mid week discount.
Husband and I stayed there as part of a Notre Dame trip to see ND (where son is a sophomore) play Penn State.
Atherton is perfectly located to stroll the main street area, see the college and absorb the vibe.

I would stay in State College-rather than Lewisburg, but it depends which school you want more 'intel" about.

If you stay in L'burg I vote for Country Inn.
Eat at the Bison-for breakfast- check out the school.
Or dine in the cafeteria to see more.

Hope the weather is nice- great trip. I am from Central Jersey (now in South Jersey hence the screen name)
If you would like any more information feel free to ask.

Nittany Lion Inn is also nice and within walking distance of downtown and the campus. I will second the recommendation on the Atherton Inn. We stayed there a few times and it's a fine place. TRIED to stay there for the ND game but it was sold out (along with everything else). So we stayed at a really nice B&B outside of town. Great game (sorry SNJ mom).
I think it helps to stay on or near campus for visits if possible. Gives you more of a flavor of the place. Seeing the campus at night is a plus.

^^^^no problem about the game (the best team won ) as evidenced by the pathetic season ND had this year. State College was electric the day/ night of that game-such fun.

LivesinNJ-when are you making this trip? Please do update us after the excursion.

If your child is an engineering major-Lehigh/ Laf should be on the list, but don't try to cram too much into a couple of days. Lehigh and Laf are a short trip from Central NJ, and can be done on another visit.

Susquehana does not offer engineering.
Interesting that you are considering Penn State and smallish LAC like Bucknell, because they offer such a different atmosphere, so perhaps you are just beginning your search and ruling out the size, geography, rural/urban issues.

Do you have a junior applicant?

Susquehanna is very near Bucknell.Juniata College is about forty minutes south of State College. As you know,Bucknell is very strong in engineering.
