Visiting Cal Poly

I think it is safe to say that I will conveniently forget to mention any such story of rats to either my wife or daughter. :-)

Thanks

My mom loved it and definitely helped with the decision process, ahah. She also would probably rather come visit me in SLO than wisconsin or montana!! haha

I definitely feel more like a Cali girl than anything else and I actually just commited to Cal Poly this morning, so I’m super stoked…

And I’ve met about 10 people on facebook and actually two or three of my friends from high school are going to cal poly this next year with me so that’ll be nice to have familiar faces.

I am so excited about the sun! and california. and the beach. and everything. haha.

I was gonna put down Yosemite, Sierra Madre and Cerro Vista as my housing choices… has anyone heard anything really about the “towers” aka Yosemite or Sierra Madre…

I never heard about rats at Cerro Vista when I was living there a couple years ago. I suppose it sure could happen…just as in any Dorm . I did hear that the fire sprinklers were activated in one building recently when someone burned some food in their kitchen. The sprinklers didnt just 'malfunction".
Not nice…but in a way a good thing. Nice to know the sprinklers work !

And “momofmv”…good choice ! I am sure your son will like living at Cerro Vista

Thanks Reza! I agree that the sprinklers are a good thing!

We are looking forward to a real tour of a Cerro Vista room during Open House.

Do you have any suggestions for things to bring to Cerro? There are a lot more things that need to be purchased and we are getting a head start. Thanks!

To islandgirl32: We’ve heard that they’re fairly social. Also, the rooms are configured differently than the Red Brick dorms. They’re longer and narrower, but look a bit more roomy. They also have something called Connections which is for freshman. A way to help kids make the transition. Planned activities and study groups, etc. My daughter has **Sierra Madre- Connections **for her first choice, **Muir (Red Bricks) Living Learning Community for the College and Math and Science **as her second choice, and **Yosemite- Connections **as her third. She wants to experience the dorm life her first year. Hopefully, next year she’ll be in Poly Canyon.

2Leashes, my son is in Muir and is very happy even though it was his 3rd choice behind Sierra Madre and Yosemite. Muir seems to strike a healthy balance between a vibrant social scene - everybody quickly gets to know everybody else - and serious academics plus it has a great location near the heart of the campus. They also got lucky and have a great RA (Resident Administrator?) which makes a big difference.

The beds can be raised fairly high so that the 2 small chests fit under them to get them out of the way and have more floor space. My son added a small side table ($70 at Target) to put his books on. He bought some posters at the UU, and brought a small lamp. Beds are extra-long so look for sheets early (we waited and had a hard time finding a comforter). Other than that, nothing’s needed for the bedroom.

At first he didn’t want his bike but changed his mind after a couple of weeks.

For the kitchen, he and his roommates coordinated (more or less) on what they’d bring from home, plus I think they took a shopping trip to the Salvation Army before school started. They have plates, glasses, silverware (about 100 forks, according to my son), a toaster oven, blender, a good non-stick pan, some baking sheets, and other assorted pots & pans.

For the living area, they all went in on a used wide screen TV they found on Craig’s List, and brought game systems from home.

momofmv

The Cal Poly website has a lot of photos and move-in information for Cerro Vista under University Housing. If you click on Moving In they show a new Guide they are apparently putting out. Don’t think it’s available yet.

Not much you need to bring for the bedroom…sheets, blankets, pillows. A couple of lamps.(desk lamp and a floor lamp). And a small bookshelf maybe. AND bring a fan ! It can get quite HOT in the rooms !!

Thank you all for the ideas of things to bring. We have looked at the list put out by Cal Poly and have already started to purchase some things. We will definitely be getting a nice tower fan!

the website has some good pictures and my son found even better ones from Google images. It even shows the furniture!

Just thought there might be some unusual things that you found you really needed. Thanks for the tip about the extra long bedroom sets. I have been watching out for them.

100 forks! Lol!
