So, is late September a good time to visit campus? My older daughter (graduated a different school in May) and I visited Syracuse in late October, and it was sleeting. I would love to avoid sleet so want to plan to get my high school senior to Ithaca at a time when she at least can see the campus at its best. Suggestions?

Well, I definitely recommend coming soon–no snow yet!

Well, certainly the earlier you go the better chance of no severe weather.

And, it’s not just Ithaca itself.

It’s the drive up I-81 through the mountains.

There are accidents on that road all the time, including Gloria Estefan’s 1990 accident, I believe.

Regarding the accidents… Is it the drivers or is it that they don’t clean the roads well or just surprise snowstorms. Visiting Ithaca this fall and wondering if this is what we would have to live through for 4 years if D likes the school. Also, why are there only 4 posts?

I-81 north of Hazleton, PA is a winding mountain road.
Weather happens.
I’ve hit ice on 81, snow and also really bad fog.
Nature of the beast.
I-81 is also a very heavily used tractor-trailer truck route.

However, personally, I wouldn’t let that affect a college decision at all.
As a matter of fact, my D is considering (and visiting) schools very close by.
Just be aware, be careful, be prepared, follow weather reports and always have a backup plan.
People do live up there all year round.
Good luck!

Ithaca doesn’t get a lot of traffic on the CC. (Sorry about the pun.) ;)

Thanks Godfather. lol
