Visiting/Demonstrated Interest on Application

Hi,

I'm an OOS female applicant for RD (I know, the worst spot to be in) and I was curious about the effect of demonstrated interest through a campus visit on my application. W&M only became a really serious option for me last June, and I didn't get a chance to visit over the summer because of my job. We are visiting in February over President's Day break, and I was wondering if I should stop in the admissions office to let them know that I'm an applicant for this cycle or if that would be unnecessary. Also, as far as planning my visit--any must-sees on campus or in Williamsburg that I can't miss for my visit?

I'm very excited, I'm from NJ and have only been to Williamsburg once (ten years ago) but I remember liking it then =)

Hi NJ, My answer is yes, stop by Admissions and better yet, why not call to see if you can schedule an interview? Explain why you could not over the summer. I am one of the lucky ones that actually grew up in Williamsburg and I never tire of visiting. I would suggest taking the Ghost Walk.(the one that takes you into several of the CW buildings ,not the Tavern Walk) Great Fun!! Of course just strolling through CW and the campus is soo nice . Why not check W&M schedule and see if there is a concert going on?I also noticed that Matoaka Lake ampitheater has had a make over and looks beautiful. Oh and you can take the ferry from Jamestown to Surry. Is it still free?
Best of Luck!

I dont’ think W&M tracks interest, at least officially… you can google “W&M common data set” and look through the info there. It will say how W&M views “interest,” I believe.

We do not track interest when making admission decisions. Those reviewing your application have no idea if you’ve visited campus or not or how many times you’ve contacted the W&M Admission Office. We assume any one who applies is interested. The only way to demonstrate interest is to apply early decision. All regular decision applicants are considered to be interested in equal ways.

While berliner’s suggestion about pursuing an interview is a good one, it’s unfortunately not an option. We offer interviews during the summer only.

Depending on the actual day of your visit there may be many options. We offer the opportunity to sit in on a class every weekday . On Mondays and Fridays, we offer the opportunity to shadow a current student for classes and lunch. We offer information sessions and tours every weekday that classes are in session plus select Saturdays.

If you’re visiting on a weekend when the shadow and class visits aren’t an option, definitely take the tour and then take the time to explore the parts of campus not on the tour (Rec Center, Business and Education Schools, fraternity/sorority areas, etc). Also, check out the campus events calendar on the W&M home page to see if there are any sporting, artistic, or other events you can attend while on campus.

Enjoy your visit.

Thank you so much for all the help =D

I’ll definitely sit in on a class, and I’m going to look in on shadowing a student. I believe we’ll be going down on a Thursday and staying Friday night, so it will be interesting to see what’s going on at campus on a typical Friday night. Plus, I plan on spending some time touring colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. I’m really looking forward to my visit :D

Well check our web site in late January when our class visitation schedule and Tribe Shadows program (when you can shadow a student for the day on a Friday) will be posted and you can plan your visit accordingly.
