Hey guys I am visiting the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigns architecture school this coming Friday, and was planning on touring the school with a group. However, when I made my appointment, they scheduled me to be 1 on 1 with a professor! I don't want to come unprepared and look like an idiot, which is why I'm asking all of you:

What questions should I be asking this professor about their school of architecture???

I know nothing about Illinois’ architecture program, so I would ask what degrees do they offer (B.Arch or the 4+2 M.Arch or other), number of students in a studio, whether there is a lot of hand drawing or computer use, more the art side or engineering side, the projects that students work on, flexibility with schedules, I dont really know what, again Im not familiar with the school.

Maybe you can ask more questions pertaining to what he teaches, (structures, drawing, design, I dont know)

UIUC offers the 4+2 MArch program. Check out the threads on the architecture forum. Do s search for UIUC or Illinois. There was a comment or two about UIUC’s program from either a mother or a student or both. They would be a good source of what to ask and also ask based on some of the comments.

I live in the Chicago area but my son chose not to apply to UIUC’s program. Mainly because it is a 4+2 program and he wanted a BArch 5-year program. Also because he heard its reputation is not what it once was for whatever reason.

My daughter graduated in May from the UIUC B.S. in Arch Studies program. She specifically wanted a 4+2 program.

You may want to ask about:
the sequence of classes,
when studio classes begin,
the differences in academics between junior year in Champaign or at the Versailles (other than the obvious comparison between Paris and Champaign),
what percentage of B.S. grads actually have jobs in the field,
what percentage attend grad school immediately,
dual-degree programs,
how are TA’s selected and developed,
firms that recruit at Illinois,
do they have enough licenses for software training,
how does Arch fit into the Fine Arts College,
how does Arch fit into the university,(is the program respected?)
how much opportunity is there to take other classes within Fine Arts or the university in general
what qualifies a student for invitation into the Gargoyle Society,
what kind of help is provided in preparing portfolios for grad school/jobs?

Then if you want to be really bold:
what does the school do to ensure profs show up for class?
what does the school do about students who don’t pull their weight on group projects?
why can’t Versailles student projects be considered for Earl awards?
