visiting Penn State on THON weekend

My D is attending an accepted student program at PSU on Thurs 2/17 and planning to stay over Friday night possibly Saturday if there are things to do. Have tickets to basketball game on 2/17 and hoping for her to observe some classes on Friday 2/18.

I see from the website that the THON dance marathon starts on Friday 2/18 and runs all weekend. Wondering how this will affect our visit. Are any THON activities open to the public? How many student participate in the THON? Will campus be lively that weekend or will everyone be at the THON?

Thanks for any info!

where did u find out about accepted student visits?

That will be a great weekend to be there. Anyone can sit in the stands at the Bryce Jordan Center and watch THON. It is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever witnessed!

knitnee- thanks
confused1- the info is on the penn state admissions website under admissions visits for accepted first year students; there is a schedule of dates based upon which college or division you were accepted to.

You should be good, there will be a lot of people around. The good thing is that you’re not going during a THON canning weekend (this weekend is the last one), there’s never anybody around during these weekends because everyone’s out well… canning.

Thanks so much.

I had a campus tour last year during THON. Rest assured its not a big deal, most of the participants are inside the JBC. They do allow you to go in and have a look, it looked like everyone was having a blast.

But yeah, if anything, it’ll be a good indicator of the school spirit and campus life.

S attending COM accepted student program on 2/22. Arriving Sunday 20th-last day of THON. What time will THON end on Sunday? Would love to catch a glimpse of this wonderful fundraiser. Would we be able to park near BJC?
Any recommendations for Monday 21st? Any sports games or shows? Thanks!

'Thon ends at four on Sunday. I think you wouldn’t have any problem parking and getting in earlier in the day, but at the end of the day it will be packed. We saw students heading out for the last canning weekend early Saturday morning. It was great to see as they are usually still in bed at that hour.

Here is the events calendar–
[Penn State University - Event Calendars](http://www.events.psu.edu/)

Thanks 1moremom. We have a six hour drive so I will plan to leave early enough to get to THON. This the type of event my son would definitely participate in so it will be great for him to view.

If you are planning on checking out THON on Sunday you need to get there pretty early, as the BJC will stop letting in people at like 10 or 11 on that day as everyone wants to see the final total revealed. Try to stop by on Saturday when it is less crowded.

what are the best spots to check out ,on or off campus, to get a feel for life at PSU? I know about the Creamery…any place else you recommend?

HUB, dining commons, downtown restaurant, large lecture classroom during the week

Thanks! Any particular restaurants you recommend?

My current favorites are India Pavilion and Cozy Thai. The Tavern has wonderful ambiance but the food is usually mediocre. The Corner Room is fun, especially if you can get a booth by the window. Zola is considered by many to be the best restaurant in town. (All are on College Avenue except India Pavilion, which is half a block off on Calder Way.)

BTW, the forecast for State College is calling for a high of 60 on Friday. :)
