Visiting Pomona next week. Anything ds and I must see or do?

Frary’s food is on par with Frank’s in my limited experience, but definitely has a better feel to it.

There are plenty things to do in the village, including an interesting mix of eclectic retail shops. If you get tired of walking, you can catch a movie at the Laemmie Theatre.
There is also a Farmer’s Market every Sunday from 8:00am - 1:00pm on Second Street between Indian Hill Blvd. & Yale Ave. Some of my favorite restaurants are Walter’s(american fusion), Tutti Mangia(Italian), Aruffo’s(Italian), Casablanca(Mediterranean) and Somecrust Bakery. Let me know if you need more information.

If you have the opportunity and are in the mood for some intellectual stimulation, you could attend an event at CMC’s Athenaeum ([Claremont McKenna College - Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum](http://www.cmc.edu/mmca/)).

And Casa de Salsa serves up margaritas (recommended by some Yelpers) that are only $1 on certain days.

I enthusiastically second Little Mother’s recommendation of Casa de Salsa for margaritas.

They have a charming little patio area where my wife and I have spent many hours over the past few years cheering each other up after saying final goodbyes to our daughter.

It’s very close to campus (right beside you if you stay at the Claremont Doubletree), the food is great, the drinks are wonderful, and the prices are more than reasonable.

Have fun!

We’ve been lucky enough to be there 3 times in the past year (general campus tour/sitting in on a class because we were in SoCal but it was too early to interview; fall interviews at 5Cs; bonus trip post ED admission because we were again in SoCal) and have become quite fond of both Viva Madrid (great spanish tapas!) and the Some Crust bakery, which has the to-die-for Uncle Crustie, a whole-grain panini with banana, nutella, peanut butter, honey, and fresh whipped cream to dip in. If you want something a little less frightening, their egg sliders always seem to have a line around the block. And we always have to get cupcakes to go.

We’ve also eaten at 2 different italian places (one fancier than the other, both good) and daughter has eaten at a variety of on-campus dining halls. They appear to have a wide variety of foods and she gives the salad bars a big thumbs up for wide variety and freshness. Enjoy!

So, Youdon’tsay, how was your visit?

moonchild, I’ve written up my visit report in the Campus Vibe section. I haven’t gotten to CMC yet. I have lots of thoughts that I’m still processing. I liked Pomona a little better. I think ds liked CMC better, at least socially. I’d love to post a compare/contrast thread for both Pomona and CMC, though I fear it would degenerate into an argument. ;)

I will say that I went to the Casa de Salsa place before I saw the recommendations! It was near the hotel. Well, I’m a fan of the margarita, and I fear this one did not measure up. It had an interesting taste, but I’m not sure any alcohol was in it! Also, my friend and I couldn’t believe how bad the band was in the next room. Some songs were OK; others were downright horrible. When we got up to leave, we realized it was a karaoke bar! Bwahahahaha. I wondered how some of those people were making a living at that. Oh, and I also made my first trip ever to a Trader Joe’s and In-N-Out. Bottome line is that ds likely will apply to Pomona binding through Questbridge, so, obviously, he really liked it! :D

Well, YDS, considering where you live, it would be hard to find better Mexican food / margaritas anywhere in the country! ;)

“I liked Pomona a little better. I think ds liked CMC better, at least socially. I’d love to post a compare/contrast thread for both Pomona and CMC, though I fear it would degenerate into an argument.”

I am not sure about a separate thread, but wouldn’t mind hearing about your impressions as well as your son’s regarding both schools. It is interesting that the two of you had slightly different feelings about the schools. Of course, if you talk to a hundred different people, you might get hundred different opinions. Considering your son’s interests, personality and academic goals, was one school a better fit than the other?

p57, I need to cook dinner now, but I’ll try to come back tonight and explain all our thoughts. I did just post my CMC visit report; that might give you a little more insight when compared to the Pomona visit report.

Visited my D a few times and here’s what i enjoyed most off-campus-- I didn’t read all the posts so this may duplicate the recommendations of others–

In the indoor mall off campus on Indian Hill Blvd.-- the indoor mall is more like an alleyway-- there is a spanish tapas restaurant. i don’t remember the name but from my description you can find it easily enough. It’s a bit more expensive than your typical mexican but we really liked it.

In LA-- Getty Museum. It’s beautiful and free admission.

Also in LA-- the Museum of Death. This is not for everyone-- very creepy. I don’t mean the subject matter, I mean the museum itself is very creepy. My older son and I liked it, my wife and daughter wouldn’t even go in. Not for little kids.

Friday night lecture at The Gnostic Society by Stephen Hoeller-- only if esoteric religion and specifically Gnosticism interests you.

Finally, if you go to LA go on Saturday or Sunday morning to avoid traffic.

You have already gone so this is just for reference an only in LA outing is to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. It is huge and great for celebrity spotting. Last time I was there Marisa Tomei and I discussed what type of potatoes to buy. Santa Monica is also one of the few places in LA that has actual pedestrians. Previous post was right about the Getty. I assume they were talking about the Getty Center. Don’t forget the Getty Villa in Malibu. Like the Center the Villa is free (15 dollars to park) but you need to make an online reservation to visit the Malibu location.

YDS,

I tried to respond to your PM, but it was full!

Try now. :)
