Visiting RHIT-a couple of questions

Yeah! We just booked our flights for our campus visit!

I was wondering how the drive is from Indianapolis to RHIT. I know it takes about an hour, but is it an easy drive? Should we plan on much traffic in the morning?

Also, if we want to grab an early dinner before we head back to the airport any suggestions on where we should eat-some place that students might visit.

Thanks

Very easy drive, the airport is located on the west side of Indianapolis, so you can hop on 70 West from the Airport and it is a straight shot to Exit 11 with no major cities or really anything between the airport and Terre Haute. Coming from Indy in the morning and going back in the evening you will be going in the opposite direction of the commuter traffic, so traffic should pose no problem.

Were you planning on snagging lunch in the cafeteria as part of your visit?

For dinner you have a ton of options. Popular choices when students dine out (mostly on the weekends) include Real Hacienda (good Mexican) on State Highway 46, Maurizio’s (good pizzza) on Wabash Avenue, and Mogger’s (great beer selection and good pub food, not a bar though) on Poplar Street. There are plenty of chain restaurants, but if you want a more unique dining experience, those are some of the more popular choices.

Thanks nic767. Glad to hear it is an easy drive. I get nervous driving in unfamiliar territory sometimes.

We haven’t heard back from the admissions office yet as to when we will be touring so I was leaving lunch open and figured we would be eating on campus. We will plan on eating at the cafeteria if we can. I figure that is a good way to get a feel for the school. How is the cafeteria food?

Thank you for all the dinner suggestions. We will write them all down and figure out what we are in the mood for that night.

thanks again!

There are a lot of places to eat…including thai. I would make sure you drive around Terre Haute and go over by the mall.

The airport drive is VERY Easy.

We really enjoyed our RHIT campus visit. As promised here, the drive from Indy to RH is very easy. Our drive there was a little interesting as there was very heavy fog for most of the way there. I don’t know if that happens a lot or not. It was a very personalized visit and everyone we met was very nice. The weather happened to be great too once the fog burned off.

Our tour guide (a darling senior girl) was perfect. She did a great job of answering all of our many questions and gave us a great feel for what it was like to go to school there. We got to see inside a few dorm rooms in a couple of different buildings and though we didn’t sit in on a class we listened in on one for a few minutes. After our tour, we got to meet with the financial rep, a professor, the director of admissions and then the baseball coach. Coach Jenkins was a very nice guy and gave us lots of helpful information. We also ate lunch in the cafeteria. My son said the food was better than that at University of Colorado, so I guess that is a thumbs up.

After lunch we drove around Terre Haute for a bit just to check out the area. Indiana State U is just 6 miles up the road from RH.

Last but not least, we went to the baseball field and watched a practice for a bit and got to meet a couple more coaches and a few players. All the students we met were very impressive. We ended up not having time to eat in Terre haute for dinner, so we didn’t get to try out the restaurant suggested here.

RH is now at the top of my son’s list of the schools he has been accepted to so far I believe. It is still one of the more expensive schools though, so we will have to see what happens.

Thanks for the visit info.
We are going in April when my son has spring break. I have not booked a hotel yet. Can I ask you where you stayed? I know they list hotels on the Rose website , but so often they are further away than I would like.

Tomorrow we visit RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) .

I will be glad when this is over.

hollyanne, most of the hotels in Terre Haute are near 3rd St. and I don’t believe any of them are “near” Rose. There is a hotel closer on Ohio St. (I believe), but they were rather pricey when I was looking into it. And it’s still a bit away from the campus.

We did not stay in a hotel in Terre Haute as our flight got into Indy at 11:15pm. We stayed at a really nice Best Western in Plainfield just 10 min from the airport. We drove 55 min the next morning to Rose and we flew out that night.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Yeah, unfortunately there aren’t any hotels right near Rose, but as nick5212 mentioned, they are all pretty close together on 3rd street and very close to I70, so it’s a quick trip to Rose. I’ve heard rumors that they are going to build a Holiday Inn Express about a mile from Rose, and if they do that will be really nice.

We did Hotwire this summer and stayed by the I70 exit hotel in front of Old Navy. Can’t remember the price, but it was ok and the price was much better than what was online.
I’ve done that on a number of trips and it’s been good. Got the DOubletree in CLeveland and Pittsburg for about half what it was listed for.

I stayed at the EconoLodge and it was awful. The room had no plates on the electrical outlets, no battery in the smoke detector, etc. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Springhill suites in Terre Haute is very nice, as is the Hampton Inn.
