My son is a Junior in HS interested in studying Mechanical Engineering. We have a visit to Rose-Hulman planned for March and was wondering if anyone could comment on the swimming program there. My son is a swimmer and water polo player in HS and has been swimming since he was 6. He only did club swimming for a year when he was much younger but has been a sucessful summer league and HS swimmer nevertheless. He is not sure if he wants to pursue swimming as a sport in college or just do it for fitness/fun/recreation. Any insight out there?

I am currently a sophomore member of the women’s swim team at Rose. The Rose-Hulman swim team just finished up an outstanding season this past weekend at our conference meet in Wheaton, IL. The men’s team did especially well, gaining around 10 new school records and automatically qualifying two swimmers to the NCAA Division III national championship that will be held in Houston in late March. One of the great things about swimming at Rose is that students are able to take it as seriously as they would like, we are only required to attend one 2-hour practice 6 days a week, but there are voluntary morning practices and weightlifting available to those who wish to train more often.

Academics are definitely the priority at Rose-Hulman, and our coach does an excellent job of working with the swimmers schedules to make sure that they are succeeding in the classroom as well as in the pool. Overall, I have been extremely happy with my decision to continue my swimming career at Rose-Hulman, it is not only a great break from studies, but the team on both the men’s and women’s side is extremely close, which allows for an excellent atmosphere here at Rose both on and off the pool deck.

RHITswim:
Thanks for sharing your experience. We will probably see if we can meet with the coach while we are there. What time(s) does the team have their 2 hour practices typically? We have always enjoyed the closeness that swimming tends to foster between the teamates. It’s nice to see the same is true at Rose-Hulman.

As the visit approaches we keep realizing that there are more things that we would like to see/experience. It seems as though a group from Rose-Hulman will be competing in the Shell Eco Marathon in April. This is taking place only a short distance from our home. We may see if we can check out the project while we are visiting and try to attend the event in Houston as well.

Thanks again - Maybe we’ll cross paths when we visit on the 14th of March!

Practices are typically held from 4:30-6:30 in the afternoon during the week, and 10-noon on Saturdays when we do not have a meet. There are no organized practices in the spring, however many of the swimmers will still show up to the pool at the normal time to get a workout in together.

We had a very nice visit at RHIT today and were on campus from 9AM until about 4:30PM. Everyone we met was pleasant and we came away with an appreciation as to what takes place at this fine institution. We were able to visit the pool and meet briefly with the coach. Two female swimmers were sitting outside the pool when we were there, so I walked up to them and asked if either was the person I had been corresponding with on the CC board (RHITswim) and, obviously, they were not. I told them that I just wanted to thank the swimmer who had taken the time to share some valuable insight with me. So, a special “THANKS” to RHITswim!

DPMdad sent you a PM if you care share your experiences and thoughts about Rose.
thanks

wtped64,

Did you get my PM reply?

I did, thank you! RHIT did include some decent Merit in our acceptance this week, but its still our most expensive school so far. We visit next month and I will share my experiences here.

Are there designated visiting dates for admitted students or do you make own arrangement? I couldn’t find the info in in RHIT web page. Thanks

I can’t speak to the question of special visiting dates for admitted students, but we just contacted RHIT to tell them when we we would be in town and they were very accomodating. Why don’t you just give them a call?

If you are an admitted student, I would recommend you schedule a visit where it is individualized as opposed to a program day. We will have admitted seniors arrive at 9 am or 1:30 pm. You can meet with a professor in the major you are considering, sit in on a class, talk with a coach, and get a personalized tour of campus.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks for the replay,
i’ve submitted mostly everything except for the Financial Aid form.My TOEFL Score doesn’t seem to appear to be submitted, but i have indeed submitted it with my SAT scores ( Which appear that they are submitted). Anyways, is there anyway that my application could be considered to be be reviewed without the financial aid form, because i will try to get funding after i get my decision. Furthermore, i’ve sent you an email to your RH email but i still haven’t gotten a replay from you yet. the email title is "International Student // My name ", i would really appreciate if you could replay me.

Thanks
