Visiting Rice this weekend - Anything happening?

I'll be taking my son to visit Rice on Saturday. I wish we could be there on a weekday when classes are in session, but this is the only time we could get away. His HS frowns on missing classes, even for college visits (and he's only a junior).

If any of you are current students, could you give us suggestions of anything else to do besides the info session and tour? Is there anything special going on on campus on the 15th that we could check out? We leave the next morning to come home so Saturday is the only day we'll be there.

Thanks for any ideas!

There is a football game! The first homegame of the season so there should be a good turn out even if our team isn't very good.

Saturday is museum district day! All the local museums are free admission for the day! Includes Rice Gallery (on campus), Museum of Natural Sciences, Museum of Fine Arts, and many others. There is a free shuttle between them. Most of them are in walking distance from Rice. For more info, check:

Wow! Amazing museums in Houston - I had no idea! Thanks for the tip.

And good luck for the football game, too :)

I sent your post to my daughter and she replied:

Well, apparently Brown's Margaritaville Party is that night, but I maybe wouldn't recommend that for visitors. Check the Shepherd calendar
(<a href="http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Emusi%5B/url%5D">http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~musi</a>) for concerts/recitals if they are into that sort of thing. There is a play at Hamman Hall playing that is student-directed. I would suggest sniffing around on the website.

Thanks, Mom of WildChild. The play sounds like something S would enjoy. Thanks to WildDaughter, too.

Patsmom,

And while you're at Rice, check out the surrounding area. In addition to the wonderful museums, to the east of the Rice campus is the world's largest medical center complex that contains 13 separate hospitals, and to the west of the Rice campus is Rice Village -- a several block area with a lot of shops and restaurants.

If you want to try some authentic Texas barbeque, head to Goode Company Barbeque on Kirby Drive (and be sure to get some pecan pie too)! <a href="http://houston.citysearch.com/profile/11638173%5B/url%5D">http://houston.citysearch.com/profile/11638173</a></p>

Enjoy your visit!

I echo the trip to Rice Village. It's such a great place, something for everyone, any kind of food you could wish for but we love the Goode company barbacue too, sorry we missed it for parents weekend. Such excitement in Houston now that the Astros evened their series at 1 game a piece. Our kids at Rice have everything at their fingertips.

Make sure to have breakfast at the Buffalo Grill. It's worth the wait and the line moves fast.

We're staying with relatives so probably won't get a chance to sample the restaurants. It's going to be home-cookin', I think! But I LOVE barbecue so I might have to make a special trip to Goode Company..

Goode company is great

Being in total Chuy's withdrawal, I urge you to go to Chuy's on Westheimer just west of Kirby so that I might live vicariously through you.

I highly recommend checking out the football game, if for no other reason than to check out the Marching Owl Band (not that I'm biased...). CC's very own smooth-talkin' wrprice will be announcing up in the press box, so that makes it all that much cooler!
