just booked our flights (with son). looks like all the hotels in the area (Garden District) are sold out. should we get a rental car and stay in other parts of town? what other options do we have at this point? Appreciate your suggestions.

There are the downtown hotels, lots of them. I know Tulane Jeff has recommended a hotel called the International House that has a Tulane rate. If you decide you might want to do this, you might also want to call them ahead of time and see what the options are for getting to campus, since the streetcar is not operating all the way up the line, or at least it wasn’t a few weeks ago. Parking is kind of expensive downtown, although you can ask them that too. The problem with a rental car besides the expense of rental, parking and gas is that parking on the Tulane campus is rather limited. There is a parking structure that is all the way on the opposite end from Gibson Hall. Although you will be starting out at the LBC I think, so about halfway between the parking garage and Gibson. I am not sure what Tulane charges for that or if they provide a complimentary parking pass for that day. You can ask admissions about that, I do seem to recall them providing such a pass a few years ago.

Otherwise you could stay in Metarie or in Jefferson Parish, but traffic can be heavy at times and you don’t know the roads. I just find having a car in NOLA more of a pain than a help except at move-in, but many others like having a car.

We went to the earlier Honors Weekend in March and they do indeed provide a parking pass for Honors Weekend, but since the event starts on Sunday and anyone can park on campus over the weekend, you won’t need to worry about checking in before you park. Just be sure not to park in any space with a meter or one that says Reserved. We got there at the beginning of the check in time and we didn’t have any trouble finding a place close to the LBC.

Ah yes. I completely blanked on the fact that it starts on Sunday. That does make parking much easier.

thank you both.

which of these two options would you choose?
- stay near the airport
$170 per day (hotel) + rental car - stay at Le Pavillion (3 miles from Tulane, 2 blocks from the superdome)
$300 per day + taxi + streetcar

Well if those were my only two choices, I would spring for Le Pavillion. It will give you a much better feel for New Orleans than staying out near the airport which is absolutely nothing like what your child will experience as a student at Tulane - and that is putting it mildly.

Have you tried the Roosevelt? We got a $200 Tulane rate there for the March visiting weekend. We took cabs to Tulane, which was cheaper than rental car/parking, and a lot less hassle.

I would also mention that others that have mentioned staying at the Roosevelt gave it excellent reviews.

i called the Roosevelt. their rate is $500 per night. how do i get a special tulane rate? i spoke to central reservation. they have no idea.

i made a reservation at le pavillon. Roosevelt is over $500 per night. rooms with Tulane discount is no longer available. thanks everyone for your help.
