Visiting UA, UAB, & UAH - suggestions for what to do, what to see?

It looks like my high school junior will be visiting all three schools this January, and if he’s got to fly clear across the country to do this, I want him to do more than the standard tour and info session. I want him to spend enough time on each campus to get a feel for what it might be like to be a student there. I’m guessing he’ll have at least 24 hours at each campus.

So, any suggestions for what he should make a point of doing, seeing, visiting while he’s there?

I know he’ll want to check out the engineering labs, and the dorms . . . but what else is a must-see, must-do on any of these campuses?

For Bama…

First set up your campus tour online…

…try for an early morning tour time! Don’t bother with the “info session”, you’ll get that info here pretty much on the Alabama forum on College Confidential which is VERY active.*

In the email include:

Student’s name and contact info

Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.

GPA and test scores (include likely NMSF if applicable)

Likely majors*

Career interests (including med, law, etc)

Anything particular that you want to see. *If you have an interest in seeing the new Science and Engineering Complex, let them know.

Allison and her assistant will arrange the rest of the day…meeting with faculty, honors people, touring honors dorms, etc.

Sometimes mail goes to their SPAM folders, so call them if you haven’t heard back within a few business days. These ladies do an excellent job and work very hard

If your son likes football, then he should visit the Paul Bear Bryant Museum, which is on the southeast side of campus.

It sounds like your son will be traveling alone. What is the plan?

As for food…if he doesn’t have transportation, then I suggest that he use the Crimson Ride or walk to The Strip and eat there for dinner.

Honors will likely arrange his lunch…

Be sure to tell Allison and Susan that your son will be visiting alone so they can really make sure he’s taken care of.

When will he be at UAH and how will he be getting there?

It will likely be Monday at UA and Tuesday at UAH, in early January. And, yes, he’s making the trip on his own, but Parent56’s son has kindly offered to host him and help him get around, so it looks like he’ll have a ride down to UAH.

So he can expect a full day visit at UA? And they’ll arrange it for him? That sounds great!

Any suggestions for UAH? Should he visit the Space Center? Would that be too much for one day? I know he’s in your neck of the woods once he gets there, so I’m hoping you can advise.

Yes, if you book a morning tour time, then give Allison and Susan the above info…they’ll schedule the whole day.

Please tell them that he’ll be alone…and what the logistics of his lodging, etc, is.

Knowing that the alphabet soup of school abbreviations can be confusing, it is worth noting that UAH is in North Alabama, UA is in West Alabama (really central west), and UAB is roughly halfway between the two. The schedule you proposed is very doable, with the possible exception of having time to visit the Space Center depending on your son’s flight arrangements.

Thank you both for your replies!

I don’t even know if the kid would want to go to the Space Center. I just figured that if he’s in Huntsville, it’s worth visiting.

perhaps m2ck also has the contact people at uah for tours etc, or probably on their website…

with the schools not being in session when he visits, some things may just be a “wing it” but he should get a good feel for campus differences etc.

The Space and Rocket Center is definitely worth visiting, if you have at least half a day. UAH’s campus is not that big, and it’s just down the street from the “Sprocket Center.”
UAB - its campus is also compact. Things to see & do in B’ham close to campus - lunch at the Purple Onion or Jim & Nick’s in 5 Points (very close to campus), a visit to Vulcan and the Civil Rights Center, a general drive-around tour of downtown and the wonderful buildings.

lol southlander, cant be a uab student without eating at Al’s! they even take blazer bucks and open 24 hours. he could have his choice of dreamland in both t’town or bham.
Surin’s is good for thai food in 5 points.

Okay, for those of us who are NOT from Alabama, can you translate ^^^, please? What is “dreamland” . . . ?

Dreamland is a great BBQ place. In the south BBQ is pulled pork. Vs in the north BBQ is the thing you grill meat on
They also have BBQ chicken at dreamland and wonderful banana pudding!
