I am driving to the University of Michigan for a college visit on Thursday. While I would like to think that the maturity of Michigan students matches their intellect, I know that school spirit can override all logical safety valves. Do you think that my car (more accurately, my dad's car) with glaring "Ohio" license plates will be safe in a university parking garage two days before the big OSU-Michigan game?

And, if you feel like doing me a really big favor, help me out in this less trivial quandary: I can get a big scholarship at OSU through national merit, but it seems like most posters on here that are national merit scholars matriculate in schools that are much more highly ranked. I can't pay the full out of state tuition at Michigan, but I would much rather go there than OSU just based on what I've read about academic programs, rankings, etc. Thanks for any opinions on either question.

Funny you should mention. The Dean of Students just sent an email out to all michigan students saying that we should avoid driving to columbus in cars w/ michigan plates...that's columbus for you...uncivilized rubes.

I think you should be fine...I can't imagine anybody getting that worked up to the point where they'd eff up a car just cuz it has ohio plates.

Obviously you don't know the scope of this rivalry. Us Ohioans take it pretty seriously and will probably pee on, in, and around your car if it had Michigan plates. As for driving up to the Whore with Ohio plates on, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as it was for the daytime.

There are lots of Ohio students here. You might get some good-natured ribbing, but I don't think you need to worry about something like getting pulled from your car and beaten, or your car being damaged.

Unlike Ohio State, Michigan is an ELITE public university, drawing a large part of its student body many different parts of the country. I doubt any one will care if you have an Ohio license plate as long as it doesn't have any sort of Buckeye gear on it.

Yeah i just got the email from the dean saying not to drive to osu w/michigan plates..or wear michigan gear. But yeah..no one will really care here about the plates..we're not as insane w/dumb unsafe rivalary things like that..

This is the University of Michigan, not OSU. Don't worry about your car. People with Michigan license plates driving to Ohio should be the ones who worry. At UM we have class.

As long as I'm not "I" football fan?
I assume you meant a football fan. Regardless of whether I consider myself a fan or not, Michigan also has a perfect record this season, so I don't see how a football fan could be turned off by UM.

See..this is why most people in Illinois consider Ohio, to be a backwater...like...honestly..who pees on a car...come on now. At least UM is the shining example that stands out in this particular case.

Did you guys see the OSU fan on the diag this morning? Dressed sloppily in red with a hand-lettered "OSU #1!" sign. It was a guy from a Toledo radio station. I guess he was hoping to provoke some huge reaction. I got the impression he was coming away disappointed.
