Visiting

Daughter and I will be visiting Stonybrook this weekend. It's our first visit and we have no familiarity with the area or the school outside of the Internet. Can anyone suggest anything that we should definitely check out either at the school or in the area? Thanks much!

Awesome that you're visiting! Hmm... the "must-see" stuff depends a lot on what your daughter is interested in. What majors is she considering, and what extracurriculars might she want to check out? When are you going to be at SB, and where are you staying?

She is considering the European Studies major with a Classics Minor. Her goal is to become a museum curator. She's a fencer and editor of school newspaper/lit mag, as well as a few other interesting things. Stonybrook will be the first big school that she is visiting and is very excited. We're from STaten Island, so we won't be staying over, but have never visited the area before. Do you think it would be possible to grab a bite on campus somewhere or would that be frowned upon? Hubby is bringing our little boy because I can't do the drive, but they're hoping to play catch and possibly have a sandwich somewhere while daughter and I take the tour.

No, grabbing a bite on campus would definitely be a good idea--and it's definitely tour season, plus there are always some "outside" events being held on campus, so if you stick to the middle of campus eateries no one will bat an eye. The SAC food place and Jasmine in the Wang Center are both good choices; the Union Deli is open if you want a sandwich, and it's near the stadium which = lots of big empty fields for catch. The food places in residential quads are probably not the best choice for a prospective student on a weekend since they do all-you-can-eat brunch, (at least, I think Kelly and H-Quad still do it every weekend; I've lost track since I moved off-campus) so lots of waiting on line and the food is sometimes eh. Though if your daughter wants to pick the brains of students in pajamas, those would be the places to go :)

Definitely check out the Wang Center, since they have a bunch of gallery space and the building is over-all beautiful. I'm also not sure it's a stop on the regular campus tour. The Tabler Arts Center is a little bit of a hike, but it's got some cool space for student-curated art exhibits and student performances. Tabler quad is absolutely gorgeous, so IMO the hike is worth it... the cherry trees in the middle of the quad are amazing in the spring, and the front of the quad is a great place for frisbee on a clear, crisp fall day.

I think the fencing team practices Sunday nights this semester, so probably not when you'll be here. I'd bet the e-board of the club would love to meet with or hear from a prospective student and fencer, so even though it's a little late to be sure of getting in touch with someone, it might be worth a try.

Wow, thank you so much. That's just great information and I'm going to alert my daughter to what you said.
