Any visual art majors out there? D2 was just accepted to Columbia, and we don't know much about the art department. She's planning on visiting again and taking a tour of the visual art department and in the meantime we'd love to hear from any current students. Or anyone who knows something about art at Columbia.

columbia’s vis arts program is small and intimate, the arts school is considered one of the best in the country. it is top five in the country for painting and drawing at the grad level, and ugrad students work with the same faculty. as a student by your senior year you’ll get your own studio, and work with some really accomplished artists one on one as the major stays pretty small. columbia is also in the midst of expanding its art facilities - a lot has gone into prentis hall located near columbia’s new campus.

some facts to know - you major in columbia college, but all of your classes are administered by the school of the arts for vis arts. you get to specialize within vis arts in an specific subdiscipline, and the class usually ends up being from 10-20 students a year.

i’m curious about this too. i’ve been comparing columbia and nyu’s art programs, and nyu seems more “practical” than columbia’s. nyu offers a bfa degree, and there seems to be an emphasis on contemporary and digital art. also, i hear columbia’s art facilities are cramped and outdated…

@admissionsgeek - Thanks for the info! You say “you get to specialize within the vis arts in a specific subdiscipline, and the class usually ends up being from 10 - 20 students a year”.

Is the subdiscipline about 10 - 20 students/year, or is that the total # of art majors/year?

How does that differ from students who “concentrate” in art?

And how are the studio spaces? Any natural light?

Thanks…
