Visual Arts at Ithaca

Can anyone comment on the visual arts program at Ithaca. Intensity of major, requirement of a portfolio, instructors, difficulty in gaining entrance if this is an issue...

My daughter is looking for a liberal arts program, but with focus on VA. Her grades and scores to date are solid (GPA weighted~4+, ACT 32). Merit aid funds availability would be a definte plus.

Thanks in advance... drd

I guess no art at Ithaca... Oh well, next school... :)

drd,

I would recommend for you to call the Ithaca College Admissions Office and request contacts for the specific department your D is interested.

We visited Ithaca twice - summer (few students there) and in November when the school was in full session. We talked with faculty, students, & staff. My D spent the night at the dorms, attended 4 classes, and spent two full days at the campus learning all she could about the school; she is interested in theatre, so we toured the Theatre School facilities and attended a play performance. The school was pretty accommodating with all our requests and they were very helpful giving us students/faculty contacts. A senior faculty member in the Theatre program called us home to answer additional questions and give us information on the program.

College Confidential is a web forum where most of the activity relates to Ivy League schools or few of the US top universities (CC Top Universities). If you are interested on those schools you would get plenty of responses.

drd,

I forgot to mention...

If you have a solid and well rounded student, the financial aid at Ithaca is great.

My D will be a freshman in Ithaca this fall. She picked this school over University of Southern California. If you want additional info, feel free to email me.

Just looked at your posts and noticed your D may be interested in Music. Ithaca started as a music school over 100+ years ago. It is a rigorous conservatory education. Their Music performance center is amazing, 735 seat concert hall, they also have a recital hall, and a new building full of practice rooms - I don't recall the exact number, but there are practice rooms for everyone who wants to practice.

You should really explore Ithaca if Music performance is your interest!

Visual art is not really big at Ithaca. The art building itself (The Cerrache Center) is separated from the rest of campus, and I didn't even know it existed until the end of freshman year. It's right next to the football field and actually has bleachers ON TOP of it for games.

If you're looking for a great art program, I would reccommend looking into other LA Schools. Ithaca is bigger on performing arts. Sorry!

Thanks Sporti... Advice well noted.
Regards... drd
