Does anyone know how good MIT's visual arts department is? I am planning to take 4.301 Introduction to Visual Arts next semester.

omg! I'd really like to know as well. I haven't heard really great things about MIT's visual arts so far.

I heard from someone who is currently taking 4.301. She doesnt recommend it for people who want to do hands on art, techniques, etc. Interestingly it covers many different kinds of art, including video (one project was to make a short video), sewing (!). From what I hear though, it seems to be more of a theory class.. like, learning about the history of art, analyzing all these different artworks, rather than a class that would teach you techniques behind painting or drawing. I never took the class myself though so I could be wrong..

There was also an article in the Tech many weeks ago about it. Take a look. :)

In other news. I really want to do art. My hands are crying. XD

Looks like the professors change every term, which could probably be a factor in how enjoyable it is. I've certainly had friends who loved it.

Yeah the visual arts department focuses so much on technical stuff, like film and photography. I really want to do real art, like drawing and painting. Apparently, 4.301 requires students to read a lot of material. this. isn't. art. grrr... wel mfa and mass college of art certainly offer amazing art classes. i took one in high school at mfa and it was awesome. but mit only allows us to get general elective credits for those. grrr...
