Need some liberal arts schools with visual and/or graphic design plus writing major - can be creative or professional writing but NOT journalism..........New England, Upper Atlantic States preferably. Thanks.

One you may want to take a look at is North Carolina State Univ :)

Check out Goucher, Bard, Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, Hampshire, Wheaton (MA), and Skidmore. In the midwest, check out Kenyon, Beloit, and Knox. The graphic design part of the equation, however, is very difficult to find at liberal arts colleges.

I know, carolyn. I guess I could have said Visual design. She is presently at CMU and feeling its not a good fit, too university-ish and she now thinks she wants a liberal arts approach. I don't know - CMU is such a strong school that I hate to see her leave.

I agree with Carolyn's comments that it's hard to find true graphic design/new media at a smaller college.

Skidmore has a very strong writing program and good art though I'm not sure about design. Another idea would be Brown which has access to RISD.

O I am sorry - I somehow missed the LAC aspect of your search - sorry

liberal arts schools as in small LACs or universities that offer liberal arts in addition to technical studies?

Take a look at Champlain College. It's a liberal arts college in Burlington, VT with an emphasis on business, and they have majors in graphic design, professional writing, and creative writing. :)

Although no LAC to my knowledge has a very strong graphic design program compared to that of CMU, RISD, Cincinnnati et. al., there are some with decent programs. I would check out Skidmore and Alfred University. Goucher has a tie in with MICA,which might be worth checking out. Also check out Bennington College.

Thank you all. She was waitlisted at Skidmore last year and yes, the design end was lacking. The CMU program is perfect.......am not sure if this is just adjustment (she was not able to come home in all 4 months nor could we visit) or a real need for a different school. Goucher came to mind, also Hampshire which has strong writing but their design stuff is almost all at UMass and why pay 45K when 1/3 to 1/2 your classes are there?
Goucher is also one I looked at and will suggest. She hates snow so Burlington might be out but I can suggest it!! Thanks folks. Any more thoughts keep them coming. I did tell her that design and LAC don't usually go hand in hand. She is envious of some of the work her friend at Smith is doing.......but Smith didn't offer design OR writing.....nor Wellesley......to get that exact combo her choices were more limited.
