On my visit to the campus yesterday I noticed that one of the packets stated that 1 year of visual/performing arts was required for admissions. This caught me by surprise, because I had always considered art, ceramics, etc to be blow off classes, and something colleges would look down upon. What kind of classes could count under that requirement? Would speech or PE or something like that work? And will I be rejected if I don't meet this requirement? I considered my admission to UMN to be pretty much automatic, so it'd be disappointing if I couldn't get in for something like this.

Also, I'm not really willing to change my senior year schedule. It'd be a hassle in the first place, and I'm much more interested in the electives I already have scheduled than I am in art.

I went to their website and found this description:
“Visual and/or performing arts - 1 year Including instruction in the history and interpretation of the art form (e.g. theater arts, music, band, chorus, orchestra, drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, media production, theater production)”

So PE won’t work and speech probably wouldn’t work either. They want the students to be well rounded so this is one of the ways to accomplish that.
Most high school students can easily fill this with their freshman year music class. If you didn’t take any art at all during your high school career, I wouldn’t be too concerned since this was the last requirement listed which may kind of allude to its importance.

Overall, if you’re a strong student, your admission definitely won’t be decided solely on your inability to fill this requirement. If you’re not offered admission it’s probably something else.
