Most random question ever on this thread: does anyone know anything about the new set of bells that chime out the hours now? I guess they were installed during the summer. I was on campus the other day when at noon they went off -- something quite nice and academic feeling... and something USC had lacked for awhile. Does anyone know whether these are real bells beign chimed inside VKC/Mudd/Bovard? Or are they just speakers/tweeters programmed to play bell sounds on the hour (a la UCLA)?

I think I recall that VKC once had a carillon set that was broken and had to be recast in Belgium. I wonder if this is it.

WHAT!!!!! I'm going to have to put up with school bells!!!!

No no, not like high school bells that signaled when homeroom ended. I mean chimey bells, like all major universities have that signal the hour by playing a melody and then clanging the # of hours it is (5 clangs for five o'clock).

Ohh, like clock bells. That makes me feel alot better

But on another note, what exactly is homeroom? I never had one. Is it like study hall?

A lot of schools have 1st or 2nd period "homerooms" where you have an extra 5 min for announcements and other administrative activites. I don't think it's a separate class or anything.

I don't know about the bells, but I'm sure glad they got them fixed finally. Maybe we'll have to stand in front of VKC/Mudd/Bovard sometime and listen carefully.
