Alright so I'm loving college and doing very well in all of my classes, I get along well with my roommate and we're great friends, and things are generally going very well.

My only complaint is this...

As the cold weather has arrived on campus, so has a terrible, deafeningly loud pipe-clanking phenomenon that wakes me up every night.

Random times in the early morning hours (and pretty much any other sporadic time during the day) the pipes start to clank... and they are extremely, extremely loud.

The entire room is filled with the noise, and honestly, there's no way I can sleep through it. I find myself waking up at four in the morning feeling extremely annoyed at the fact that the pipes are so loud and the annoyance stops me from falling asleep again.

I've tried keeping my iPod in my bed with me so that I can turn it up and play music to drown out the pipes, but it doesn't really seem to be working. To not hear the pipes you need to pretty much turn the iPod to its highest volume, which is pretty much as distracting as the pipe noise itself.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do I just need to train myself not to wake up?

You may get used to the noise over time, or conditioned to it, and eventually be able to sleep thru it. Ear plugs may help...I live with a chronic snorer and have used SilentEar from Ear Plugs, ear phones and white noise machines for everyone, Earplugs for Musicians and Swimming!
If you need a good night's sleep, before a big test or so, you could take a sleeping aid. And exercising at night makes some people really tired too, maybe that would work.
And talking with maintenance/housing is a good option.

All the best to you, hope something works out...good luck.

ginnyvere that is what i do!! even now when it's 30 degrees outside haha i turn my box fan on and point it at the wall, it helps a lot....now i probably won't be able to sleep without the noise!

Hey, so here's some things you can try.
1.) Go speak with your RA (resident assistant). Tell them that it is interfering with your sleep (therefore interfering with your education). If they tell you they can't do anything go to...
2.) Talk to your RD (residence hall director). Tell her the same thing, and ask to have the pipes fixed or be moved. If the RD says s/he can't do anything, go...
3.) Talk to Residence Life (or Housing...whoever is in control of dorms on campus). Complain, and say you can't sleep, and it is interfering with your homework and your grades are going to fall dramatically if you continue to sleep so poorly.

If none of these people help (and someone should be able to), take your complaints as high as you need to. This is an issue, and isn't fair to you or your roommate. If this happens to several people, get a group of students together to complain.

I can't sleep without it anymore, at least not well. I run a white noise machine rather than a fan because I don't like having a fan blowing on me at night. It was a godsend in the dorms. I've had roommates who said that when I was gone for the weekend or something, they would go turn my white noise machine on at night because it helped them to sleep through noise.
