I am having trouble remembering words that I learn. Are there any strategies to remember most of the words or to learn the meanings?

I suggest purchasing the Direct Hits books. The give great descriptions, anecdotes, and illustrations of the words along with simple definitions. Helps to remember them long term!

Thanks. right now im using a book called Mastering The Verbal PSAT SAT 1

no, ur the type of person that just needs to put more time into it to be able to memorize

I have trouble memorizing as well. I’ve found that just skimming a word-meaning list on 4-5 occasions over a short period (~2 weeks) works great. After every skim session, I put a hand over the meanings-column and quiz myself in my head. Give it a try.

Repeat them again and again. Even after you think you got them down, keep repeating them to make sure they stick.

What I did was write down a list off words from Barron’s, then carry it around all day and take it out when I have nothing to do. Worked like magic. Each week I memorized up to a 100 words. I also did Direct Hits but it wasn’t enough.

You are obviously a Barrons’ fan. I found (like many other CCers) that DH and the Blue Book were absolutely enough to get me to a 760. If a student thinks he/she has enough time to memorize 3500 words, especially as school is about to start, then good luck! The examples in DH really helped me learn and remember the words. I then tested them on the Blue Book practice tests.

Mikethechimp- Why did you wait so long to post after you took the May SAT? We could have used your insight over the summer.

Mikethechimp- What were the really hard words from the May test that you mentioned in another post?

I am working on getting ready for the October SAT and those would be helpful to know.
