Need you earnest help regarding vocabulary, your comments will be highly appreciated

Hello! Hope you're in good spirit!

I would like to enrich my vocabulary and I'm actually confused about what to do! According to Xiggi memorizing is not a good idea. English is not my first (native) language, therefore, I think perhaps it's imperative for me that I learn words by heart. I'm a bit puzzled that exactly how many words should I memorize! There are as many as 4000++ words and sensibly, memorizing so that many words is not a wise / smart idea. Could you kindly provide me any (free) web-link such as (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1191190-top-400-vocabulary-words.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1191190-top-400-vocabulary-words.html</a>) from where I'll be able to gain sufficient words and become proficient?
How many words should be enough? I've to score 2100 out of 2400.

Thank you very much. Please accept my utmost gratitude for your humble co-operation. Have a lovely day :)

That word list seems pretty good. I studied Barron’s 3500 words and sentence completions have never been a problem to me since. I wouldn’t advise this though since 3500 really is too much. Most people, including me, would suggests the Direct Hits book. Many of the words are probably already on that list but I’ll pm you a pdf link to it.

I had a book that told me what words have appeared a lot on the SAT. I made it a priority to learn those words first. Then, instead of just blindly memorizing words, I looked at some common roots. In some cases, you don’t need to know the exact definition, and even if you know the connotation (negative or positive) based on the root (for ex- mal : bad) it can help you out.

Dear Niceboat and futurebhen17, thanks a trillion! Cheers!! Stay swell :)

futurebhen17 what book is it?

I’m going to come right out and say that for me, memorizing vocabulary was the most worthless activity that I did in my life. I memorized 100 words per day for the whole summer after my sophomore year for SAT school in Korea, and I think I ended up retaining about 50 or 60 words permanently in my brain. Did memorizing vocabulary introduce me to new words so that I would be familiar with them during the SAT? Yes it did, but there are only about 50 or 60 words in the vocabulary section of the CR and most are very basic anyways if you read many books.

Again, this is just me. Everyone is different, but I wanted to share my opinion. If I could have that summer again, I would practice on the other aspects of the test that I was weak in instead of freaking out about vocabulary. If you really want to memorize some vocabulary, top 200 or 300 SAT word list is probably ideal.

Best of luck to you and don’t stress about the vocabs as much as I did! :)
