vocal teacher

can anyone recommend a vocal music teacher for an undergraduate soprano?

I hope you get an answer here but most people using cc are either parents or high school kids, so it may be that the folks who see your question won't know the answer. If you don't get an answer from cc, I would suggest that your daughter join the facebook groups for the classes of 2011 and 2012 (both are open groups) and try posting this question there. She could also search within those groups and see if she can find a thread with students who are in the music dept, and ask the kids directly if they have any suggestions. (I see from your other post that your daughter would like to sit in on a class and speak with a voice teacher when she visits UT.)

The music dept has a "request information" form for prospective students. Your daughter has probably already used it but she could try doing it again and asking a questions in the box at the bottom of the form.

Or, if you look on the Butler School of Music web site, you can see there are two female full professors, Rose Taylor and Darlene Wiley. Dr. Wiley's blurb specifically mentions that she is a lyric coloratura, so your daughter could try emailing her for advice. Butler School of Music - Darlene Wiley

I think that sitting in on a class is a great idea if you can arrange it. When my D was in high school, she had email correspondence with three UT professors and sat in on three classes, two during our first visit to UT (advanced classes in her unusual major) and one during our second visit to UT (a class offered by the honors program she is in). In each case, the professors were kind to her and quite agreeable to having her sit in on their classes. I think the combination of sitting in on the classes and meeting some of the students in these classes (that she'd be taking at UT) was what bumped UT to the top of my D's list. Good classes, nice students, great professors.

Good luck!
