I am a high school senior and I have been studying classical voice for 6 years at Westminster choir college of Rider University. I was very intrigued by Bennington but I was worried that it wouldn’t give me ample oppurtunities to perform classically, since I want to pursue Vocal Performance. I have never been so intrigued with a school, and I don’t think that the size would bother me but I’d really like to know if I would get ample performance time and if its voice dept. is classically centered. Does anyone know about the classical voice dept. at Bennington, or if it is strong in voice to begin with? Thanks.

pretty much the exact same question. =]

I am bumping this thread because my son is very interested in Bennington and loves to sing (A capella, classical, chorus, musicals) and would love to be able to continue at least one of these in college. Any info about singing at Bennington would be interesting to us. Thanks!

My daughter’s voice teacher - classical - recommended Bennington for voice. The department seems small - and I’m not sure about the musicals - but the quality seems high. Perhaps you should contact someone who teaches voice there directly. I’d be interested in learning more, and will share as well, if I get info.

Thank you, itsallok. That is good to know. My son is interested in classical voice but not as a major at this point. He should probably find out if non-majors are eligible to take private lessons if that is important to him. Did your daughters teacher specify any teachers at Bennington? He’s more interested in composing electronic music. I’ve just been reading the music faculty bios and I am impressed. If your daughter is thinking of majoring in music she should certainly check out the music majors forum.

At the time my son visited Bennington last Spring, he was taking an electronic music class in high school that he really enjoyed. He decided to sit in on an electronic music class at Bennington to see how it compared, and he loved it. The professor was [Randall Neal](http://www.bennington.edu/index.cfm?objectid=24CB6154-5056-BA14-23FC9AA69F673F23&Faculty_Member_ID=1006020305).

Thank you so much, Sodiumfree! I am realizing that Bennington could be just the place for my son.

I’m going to bump this thread another time, as I do not feel an answer was reached. I’m really interested in classical vocal performance and Bennington is probably my top choice right now. I don’t fully know that voice is what I want to do, but I would like to continue studying it. I’m just curious what the college has to offer for students of voice. Mostly, I’m curious about the quality of the teachers. From the website, I can see that Bennington offers classical vocal courses and has several unique opportunities for performance. They also teach Sacred Harp, which I love! When I told my teacher that I was considering Bennington, he said that he did not know about the vocal program there. He told me that if I could get into Williams College, I should go there because the voice teacher is very good. However, I don’t think I could get into Williams. I also prefer Bennington for several other reasons. I know that there was at least one successful soprano that graduated from this school, which is encouraging.

Thanks in advance,
~Alex
