Hi, I'm currently a junior, but I'm a little confused about how these two are differentiated on apps. What exactly is the difference between outside EC's and volunteering? Or are all outside EC's = volunteering?

My examples:
Lab internship (10-12)
Creative and grant writing for the local Marsh (10-12)

Edit: Also, sports are EC's, right?

I'm not paid for either of these. I previously thought that they would count as extracurriculars. Are they actually volunteering?

Technically, extra curricular activities are anything you do outside of school. This would include sports AND volunteering.

However it looks like the forms you are dealing with give you the option of separating them. Writing for the local Marsh (I take it this is a nature center?) would classify as volunteer activity. If there isn’t a separate place to record the internship, you could consider it a job (if it’s paid), a volunteer activity (if it’s unpaid), or an extra curricular activity. Activities directly sponsored by your school such as a sport or HS drama production or science club would classify as an EC.

Don’t stress so much about getting these things into the “right” category. Just get them in somewhere.

Good luck!

^Thanks.

Could writing for the marsh also count as an extracurricular? It’s one of my main EC’s.

I’m assuming we should only list activities once (i.e, no doubling an activity in both the EC’s and volunteering sections).
