Volunteer!

Hi, my name is Natalie and I may be applying to U Chicago ED. I'm not worried about academics or extracurriculars, but I AM worried about volunteer work. On the collegeboard website, U Chicago lists volunteer work as an important factor for admission. I doubt I have more than 50 hours total.

A. summer after freshmen year, around 50 hrs for Red Cross

B. summer after sophmore year, I took college courses at community college. Sociology was 2x week, macroeconomics was 1 or 2 (depended)

C. summer after junior year (now), I work at least 30 hrs per wk, earlier it was 35.

Do you think this hurts my chances at U Chicago??

A simple and firm no.

I doubt it will hurt your chances. Also, UChicago is EA - not ED - so it’s not binding.

This will not keep you from being admitted. I had even less volunteer experience than you do.

sry, I know it’s EA, I’m just used to every other place being ED

It’s not like everybody has the time/means to rack up volunteer hours, and I hope I speak for the admissions office when I say volunteering is something that should come from the heart (or, if you’re doing it with a church group, doing it to be social as well).

The only time I volunteered in high school was in the summer to get my mom off of my back for not doing anything worthwhile. I have put in significantly more volunteer time in college :-)
