Volunteering at family business, does it count?

My parents own a homecare for elderly folks. That is, taking care of them sort of like a retirement home, but more personal.

I wasn't able to score an internship this summer, so I thought I could just rack up tons of hours just working around the business. I can probably get hundreds of hours by the end of summer.

Will I be able to put this on my college apps? Will it look better than volunteering at a library or other place, and does it look bad since it's a family business?

This is a great activity if YOU enjoy it and find it personally rewarding. On your college apps, no one cares if it’s family or not, just put “volunteering at elderly/nursing home”

I also spent a lot of time every summer being a receptionist at my parent’s clinic, and didn’t do many internships, but I think colleges value a down-to-earth job just as much, if not more, than a prestigious-sounding internship.
